NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. In celebration of the fifty-sixth anniversary of John Knox Church a service was held in the Oddfellows' Hall on Wednesday evening. The lady members of the church management comjmittee. with a number of assistants, served tea to a large company. A concert followed at which the Rev. VV. KHutchison presided. The programme included an address by the Rev. , Gibb, piano solos by Miss D : Hills, songs by Mrs H. Johnstone, Misses Scott and M. Trollope, Misses «• Blake and C. J. Keir a trio by Misses D. Ayres and E. Lane, and Mr Rands, and several shanty songs by a party of High School boys, acetunpanied on the piano by Mr G. Gibbs Jordan. BROOMFIELD. Crops and grass are growing apace after the drenching rain of last week, when 4.15 inches fell. Just at present hot nor'-westers are being experience . At the Broomfield School an oak tree given by Dr. Thompson, was planted in memory of the late Mrs George *J or " nail by Mr R. Hunter, on behalf o the school children. At a later date a tablet will be placed by the tree. _ Miss Mary Gorrie was entertained by the Broomfield ladies at the residence of Mrs I. F. Crofts, Mt. Brown, at a "gift" afternoon. WEST EYRETON. A large number of friends gathered in the hall to bid fare'well to Mrs Bennett, who is leaving the district. A very pleasant evening was spent in cards and dancing, music being supplied by Mr L. Tyler. During the evening the chairman. Mr J. Cowen, expressed the regret felt at the loss oi a resident who had spent all her lite in the district. He asked her to accept an easy chair and table as a parting gift. Miss Bennett received a tortoiseshell toilet set. Other speakers were the Revs. Hanby and Simmonds and Messrs S. Smith and C Mcintosh. Mr C. Bennett responded on behalf of nis mother. CUST. The Cust Amateur Dramatic Society held a very successful entertainment in the Institute Hall on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance Two plays, "A Regular Fix" and ' A Man of Ideas," were presented, botn of which were well received. An orchestra under Mr D. Maindonald, supplied spirited music. The proceeds were in aid of the Hall. Afterwards a dance was held music being supplied by Miss A. Wayland and Mr Whitham. AKAROA. At a meeting of the Plunket Society, presided over by Mrs T. Masefield,- the report of Nurse Barnett was adopted, showing that the following cases had been dealt with: —Visits to rooms: Adults 42, babies 28, older children 7; new cases, 2; home visits, 1; telephone messages, 3; letters of advice, 3.
