LIFE IMPRISONMENT.
SENTENCE PASSED ON W. J. HARDIE. (PBESS ASSOCIATION TJSLEOEAM.) „ DUNEDIN, November 8. William John Hardie, who was found guilty of manslaughter of a Chinese at Kyeburn was sentenced to-day to imprisonment with hard labour for life.
In passing sentence Mr Justice Mac» gregor said that on the evidence the jury might have convicted the prisoner Of murder. Ho could find no tmg circumstances to warrant passing less than a life sentence. It was quite plain that prisoner killed his unfortunate victim in very brutal circumstances, tie was a young man, 22 years of age, who had been in and out of the industrial schools from an early age. ' He seemed to have been incorrigible and dishonest.
