(special to SHE PEES 3.) GEEYMOUTH, November 7. Mrs Allan Smith, who has been spending a holiday in Christchurch, returned yesterday. Mrs A. Steel, who has been visiting Napier, has returned to Greymouth. Mr G. L. Kay leaves to-morrow on a visit to his parents in Temuka.

Mr A. Goodwin, of the Southbridge railway staff, has been appointed timber checker and ticket inspector at 'Greymouth in succession to Mr H. P. Hobson, who has been transferred to Wellington. Mr C. Marsh, formerly stationmaster at Kumara, and now at Hastings, ires been appointed to the position of chief clerk at the railway goods sheds in place of Mr C. J. Williams, who was recently appointed stationmaster at Milton.

Mr F Eayward arrived from Dunedin yesterday, and left this afternoon for Hokitika.

Mr F. W. Richards (Melbourne) arrived last evening on a visit to the West Coast.

Mr C. Faustow, who received severe injuries to his arm at McVicar's farm, Upper Grey Valley, last Thursday, had the arm amputated at the Reefton Hospital yesterday. Plunket Society. Recently a special appeal was made for funds for the Greymouth branch of the Plunket Society throughout the district which resulted in a net sum of £442 being obtained. Brunner Collieries. A tender has been let for the erection of storageibins at Wallsend for the Brunner collieries. To provide space for the bins a portion of the railway line will be moved to the river side of the mine's shafts. College Success. Miss Mona Hannan, a pupil of the Dominican Convent at Dunedin, and daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Hannan, Greymouth, has passed with honours in the Trinity College, London, senior elocution examination. Absent Voters. The number of applications for postal votes in the Westland electorate is reported to be very heavy, and is expected to be a large total by polling day. In Bankruptcy Peter M. Eadie, storekeeper, of Bell Hill, filed his schedule to-day. Assault Charge. John Thomas Carson, a young man, appeared before Mr F. H. Kilgour, JJP., this morning, charged with indecently assaulting a female on Monday last. Sergeant Smyth, who prosecuted, applied for a remand tilK Monday. opposed bail as accused had to serve a month's imprisonment, having failed to pay a £5 fine imposed a few weeks ago for assaulting a little girl at Greymouth. j The Weather. • The weather yesterday and to-day has been fine, with a cool breeze blowing. The sea has been smooth, _ and fishing launches have been out in the roadstead fishing. The chief catches have been flounders, sole, turbot, and gurnet, which command a ready sale.
