SOUTH ISLAND INTERESTS.
REPRESENTATION IN LONDON. \ An, interesting letter from Mr M. W.< Stevenson, proposing that an effort should be made to have the Sooth Island interests represented in London, was before the executive of the Progress League last, "night. . . ' . •V:' v it seemed de'sirablethat there should be some direct; Irepresentative ; of ~the South Island, someone in th6nature of a. Trade .Com-■missioier/-to represent all interests. As 'tHe'Government /was; about to take over a new building <in London it be possible to arrange for a South Island Department,' where the representative of the South Island could be accommodated. "It may be suggested," |he writer, went on, "that individual firms have their own arrangements 'at Home, but these are personal 5 the' representation of a Trade Commissioner would be in the. interests of over half. a million people. Apart;from our big export business of primary products, we have an equally large import trade; we also have, as \far as.the; South Island is concerned, a much neglected and. very valuable prospective tourist business,. Then we have our immigration question, and there is' a. : big section of the South Island business community who think that with more South Island publicity in London the results would be very beneficial to us in every,.way." The fact that the writer,; made no reference to the financing; of hia proposal was commented upon, but it was ! decided to submit the proposals to South Island Chambers of Commerce and Progress Leagues.
