[Matthew Flinders, the English navigator, who surveyed a great portion of the Australian coasts, was born at Doningteii in 1774. Going out to Australia in 1895 he determined to investigate the portion of the fcqast south of Port Jackson, and carried put a series of voyages, discovering,, the previously unknown strait between Tasmania and the mainland In 1801 he commanded a scientific expedition, which investigated the Australian coasts and their products. On his way home in 1803 he. Wkfi first wrebked and then detained by the. French Governor 6f Mauritius, not being allowed to rettifn hothe until 1810, The result of his eSblofatiotis Was given to the world JH ''A Vtivage to terra Australis." He died dti July 10th\ 1814, the day on whleh his book was published.
