ELECTRIC LOCOS.
FOR USE ON PORT LINE.

Bisc electrio locos for use on the Christchurch-Pdrt lirie are dUo at Lyttelton to-morrow ex the b.b. Hereford, and except for one or two small parte will be.landed completely assembled, so that it will be possible for them to be placed directly oil to the traok on {he wharf. The locos will be hauieu to the siieds where they lire to bejkept until their trial runs on the completion of the electrification of the line.
Each loco will be fifty tuns in Weight and will be able to attain a spewed of 40 miles per hour arid a gross Haulage capacity of 600 tons. A litis voltage of 1500 volts, direct current, will be utilised to drive them. The locos are of the engine type known as 0-4-4-0, with a 3ft Gift gauge. The length over the buffer beams is 86 feet 6 Inches, the rigid wheel base is 9 feet {J iflched, the height td the centra or the roof 10 feet 6 inches, and the mst* all Width B feet 4 inches. The electrical equipment iff an English "all electrio!? camshaft control the bfakitig being on the compresett air principle. The two ebmpressefs, supplied by the Weatitighouse Aijfr Brake C 6., Ltd., are operated by 1500 vclts direct current with a pressure of fy Clibie feet pe* minute. there are two compartments in the superstructure, one at each end for the drivers The locothotives were manufactured by the English Electrical C 6., Ltd.. to the specification of the Siferirtl and Electrical flngirieer and the Chief Mechanical Engineer 6f the Kew Zealand Railways! The contract for the gUnuivintr the locos, was 1 6htoined hv Cory Wright And Batm6ri, of Wellington, the Hew Zealand agents.
