STOCK RAISING.

GREYMOUTH,'November 6. Recently the Greymouth Chamber of Commerce applied ,to the Railway Traffic Manager at Christchurch for details of the stock railed to Canterbury for the year ended March ,31st last. The information, now -to hand shows that during the year 49,619 sheep and pigs - were transported, of' which 4754 were railed from Otira, 7334 from Ngahere, 4392 from Ikamatua, 12,465 from Rcefton, 3851 from Kumara, 1915 from Hokitika, and 13,709 from Ross. The Reefton figures would include stock from the Murchison district, and South Westland stock would be railed from Ross. The cattle railed for the same period were'2o79, 669 of which came from South Westland. The figures indicate the advance made by pastoralists on the West Coast during the last decade, previous to which it had to import most of its mutton for local consumption from Canterbury. v West Coast Pastures. Mr C. S. Dalgleish, agricultural instructor, stated to-day when discussing the value of top-dressing West Coast grazing lands that where potash had been utilised' by farmers a great imI provement had been noted on pastoral lands. Experiments had been carried out with success in the Grey Valley, Totara Plat, and Inangahua districts. Unusual Position. At the Magistrate's Court to-day, during the hearing of a judgment summons case, Ernest Lilley v. Stanley Cross, the creditor's solicitor, Mr R. D. Jamieson, applied for an order for payment at £3 per mouth. The S.M. (Mr W. Meldrum) then announced that debtor, who was not present, had writ'ten the Court offering to. pay off the debt at £4 per month till the amount, £l3 12s, was liquidated. The creditor's solicitor preferred to have ah order made for £3 monthly, and a penalty fixed for default rather than have the order made by consent. The Magistrate acceded to. this. Sawmiller Injured. Thos. Quinn, an employee of the Hulcarere sawmill, received injuries to his right hand yesterday through it coming into' contact with a saw. He was conveyed to Reefton Hospital for treatment. Weddings. The wedding of Mr Walter Herring, of Greymouth, to Miss Letitia Brown, of Runanga, was solemnised by Rev. T. N. Cuttle at Runanga Presbyterian Church this morning. Miss Alice Williams, of Christchurch,. was bridesmaid, and Mr T. Brown, the bride's brother, was best man., Mr and ■ Mrs Herring' left later by express on & tour of the North Island. The wedding of Mr Maurice Moore, of Stillwater, to Miss Gertrude Hibbs, of Fairfax, • Invercargill, took place yesterday, the Rev. Father Gregory officiating. Miss A. Moore, sister of the bridegroom, "was x bridesmaid, arid Mr W.' Moore was best man. Mr and Mrs Moore left later for Southland by motor on their honeymoon. Personals. Mr W. Harding, road overseer to the Cobden Town Board, has resigned owing to ill-health. Mr T. Barnard left this morning for Christchurch, en route to Gisborne. Mr A. Y. Oliver, who has been -indisposed, left'to-day on a short holiday visit to Christchurch., Mr Arthur Parfitt, of the postal staff, Wellington, Who was present at his uncle's . funeral yesterday, returned north to-day.... The death -of Mr Joseph Hill,, of Waiuta, occurred at Reefton Hospital, last night following on miners' phthisis. He was a native of 1 Bendigo, aged- 56, and had been 22 years in the district. The. Grey League Football Club presented Mr Leach with a Morris chair, and the railway relay gang with • an eight-day clock, on the occasion of his recent marriage. Mrs Mary Mathieson died to-day, at the Grey Hospital, aged 63. She was a;native of Scotland. The death of .Mr Jno. Harrington occurred at Blaketown this morning after an indisposition of eight years' duration. He. was a native of Hokitika, 59 years of age, and had spent many years goldmining in the Greenstone. Mrs H. M. Phillips, who has been visiting her mother, Mrs. J. F. White, returned to-day to Palmerston North.
