WHIPPETS TO COMPETE NEXT SATURDAY.
Next Saturday the New Zealand Whippet Racing Club will hold its spring meeting at the English Park Stadium, when m addition to the ordinary events a tin-hare race, over 440 yards, has been ariangeu for registered wmppeta. Considerable expense baa been eidaiied in Uie staging ol this attraction, but irom the entuusiasui sliown at an omci&l trial hold last evening it would appear that a very keen contest is to be expected, i'nis is Uio hrst time that tin-hare racing has taken place in j.\ew £ea.lana, and the innovation nan received considerable support from whippet owners throughout the south Island, ivniUt a number oi dogs came down •ome while ago from the Paraierston North district in order that they might be properly schooled to racing after the mechanical hare. It is rumoured that one of the northern competitors is likely to prove the winner ol the contest. In addition to the tin-hare race, nine other events are being provided, the mo3t important amongst these being the contest for the Now Zealand Cup, a race which ie worth fifty sovereigns to the winner.
