NOTES ON THE RACING.

Troilus Improves. All the acceptors paraded for the Middleton Hurdle Handicap, Beaumont and Carinthia disputing favouritism, with only sixteen chances between them.' Ned Kelly and Nine of Spades were the early leaders and led out o» the straight from Beaumont ana Troilus, Nine of Spades and Beaumont lost their positions through faulty jumping g°l n fj along.tho back, and Troilus joined >ea Kelly in the lead. Troilus was tue fiist to antar the straight from Nea

Kelly, Nine of Spades, and Carinthia, and in the run home Troilug went on to win from Nine of Spades, who finished ou well after making a poor effort at tho last lence. Ned Kelly tired in the straight, and was beaten into third place, a length and a hMf away. Carinthia was next, and then at intervals came Apple Dighton, Beaumont. Nucleus, and Pantler, with Mime last. Bonatic bumped his rider ofl at the second fence.

Troilus benefited by his first day's race, and his new owner, who formerly raced Waterloo, did not have to wait long for a return. The Ms-North, Islander jumped well throughout and promises to develop into a good winner. Nine of Spades lost his chances by shirking some of his fences, and it was his pace on the flat that stood to hfm. .Ned Kelly showed his customary speed over three parts of the journey, but lackedy stamina at the business end. Carinthia did not run up to expectations, while Beaumont made two bad mistakes and narrowly missed falling at the mile post. Criterion to Arrow Lad. Crown Area, who was sold yesterday to the Riccarion owner-trainer, J. McCombe. was the only withdrawal from the Criterion Handicap, for which Reremoana was the best supported m a fairly even betting pool. Cimabue was the first out, and endeavoured to win from end to end. He entered the straight in front of Arrow Lad, Benzora, Teri, and Royal Saxon but inside the distance Arrow Lad challenged him, and, in a stirring finish, the latter gained the verdict by the narrowest of margins. Tin's pair had the ishue to themselves, the third horse, Reremoana being two lengths away, with Celerity 11. on his heels. Goblin Market was nest in front of Kilbronsyth and Benzora, Royal Saxon being tne last to .finish. Arrow Lad won the race by sheer stamina. Cimabue appeared to he the winner until Arrow Lad tackled him, and then only faded out in the last few strides. Reremoana ran a solid

race after an interrupted passage. He was closo in behind the leaders at the far turn, but got squeezed ._out, and he did well to finish. in third place. Celerity 11. tailed the field over thg first half mile and had too much ground to make up to have any chance. Goblin Market was sent back at the four furloTic mark when occupying a good position, and then was close up to the leaders commencing the home run. The Two-Year-Olds. The Invell Handicap resulted in a close finish' between Nedda, Dutch Money. *alid Francolin, who were the most prominent at the false rail. Dutch Money had a slight advantage of Nedda inside the distance, but the latter .finished on the better and gained the honours by a length. Francohu was a .similar distance away in third place, followed by Duellona, Stealth, Belcaire, Stately, and Admiral Drake. i The start was a good one and the | three placed youngsters were tho quickest to begin, their nearest attendants entering the home run. being Belcaire, Duellona, and Admiral Drake. The winner, who ran second in hot first start at tho ■ DunuUin Meeting, showed a lot of stamina. She claims that good galloper Michnela. as her dam and is Held under lease by Mr B. S. Irwin, of Dunedin. Dutch Money was making her initial effort, and her performance was very encouraging. Francolin registered another placed performance, and her record, is now three seconds and one third. ! The Blue Riband. Eight paraded' for the New Zealand Derby, and in what was not considered a high-class field Silver Paper was made A twelve hundred tickets better favourite than Concentrate, with Full Feather a good third choice. From an excellent dispatch; "Nightmarch took charge going out of the straight, but was 1 steadied going along the back, and Full Feather joined him. This pair were clear of Concentrate, Cashier, Moorgas, Silver Paper, and Lucky Light at the mile post, where Roscrea broke down and was pulled up. The pace was slow to this stage, but Nightmarch increased the speed when -he again shot to the front at the far turn. He was two lengths ahead of Full Feather, Cashier, and Moorgas entering the straight, and although challenged over the deciding stages by Cashier ho recorded a comfortable win by a length. Cashier was a length and a half in front of Moorgas, with Silver Paper close up next, followed by Eull Feather, Concentrate, and Lucky Light. The race was very unsatisfactory, and none of the runners seemed to ■ want to make the pace. The first half took 55 1-5 and the last six furlongs 118 2-5. Nightmarch always looked, a winner once the straight was reached, and with three wins on end he has well repaid the 1000 guineas paidl for him by his present owner. Cashier, built on the small side, battled finish well, while Moorgas surprised by being in the money. It is a significant

fact that the three placed horses were still eligible for hack company before the race was decided. Silver Paper was under a hard pull over half the journey and was not allowed to make a forward move until the straight was reached. He then failed to finish on and registered another disappointment to a large following. Full Feather showed up for a while when the pace was slow, but faded out in the run home.. Concentrate-was never dangerous, white Lucky Light was outclassed. , Good Judgment. The public went solidly for Historic and Mendip in the Hagley Handicap, and.their judgment proved correct as they fought out the finish. Mendip was well back at the home turn, but when he settled down to serious business he was close up to the leaders, gome Lad, Phastar, Amor, Historic, and Pride, as the straight was reached. He and Historic sorted themselves out when'the distance post was reached, and Mendip, always holding the upper hand crossed the line with half a length's advantage. Pride finished on the best of the remainder > three lengths away'from the second horse. Imarosebud was a fair fourth and was followed home by Amor, Phastar, Malmsey, All Comment, Colonel Crawford, Wreath of Myrtle, and Some Lad. Mendip and Historic fought their Wellington race over again, the winner turning the tables on the Riddiford eeldin". Nothing else had a chance with the pair. Pride did well in her second race, but the field behind her cave poor displays. Malmsey was the victim of a bad passage from the far turn where she held a forward position on'the rails, but for the next two furlongs she gradually got knocked back. She finished well on the outside of the field but was set an impossible task to participate in the finish.

A Splendid Race. The best race of the Meeting to date was witnessed in the Metropolitan Handicap for which all the acceptors, except CountCavour paraded Mandane carried only three hundred tickets more tlmn Hoylake, with Oratnx another Snety dances less After the field fettled down, Battle Colours took and led to the back stretch in front of a bunched field. There was little alteration m the running to the far turn, and as the straight entrance was in sight, Battle Colours was clear of Set Sail. Mandane. and Hoylake, with the others close up Hoylake made- a forward move on the outside nt the* turn into the straight and was rlose in behind Battle Colours and Set the home run.Battle S*i' „ wa s still in front at the disten£ buTw£ then tackled by HoyK Who was being hard ridden This ia*.e, »» d : n an exciting tussle, a P nTa huffid yardsm* the n-s„no%hot up on the outside; The ft, croledV line locked together, theiudce declaring in favour of Hoy,'te by°a head margin, with another head between the favourite and Mandane Knk Note was two lengths away

next, in front of Oratrk and Set Sail, with Beacon Light last. Hoylake was on the outside of the field throughout, and thus had to cover most ground. He was not allowed to go to the front, as in the Cup, and had to be hard ridden to complete his task. Mandane seemed to lose ground at the top of the straight, and executed a remarkable run over the finishing stages. Battle Colours ran his best race this season, and after acting as pace-maker | throughout, lie only suffered defeat m the last stride. Oratrix made a promising run on the rails in the straight, but could not get through, and nei chance was lost. Set Sail ran a good race to the straight entrance,, but failed to finish on. Beacon Light again drifted back in the run home. Outsider Prevails. The Randolph Handicap resulted in a surprise victory for an outsider in Proud Knight, who, beginning smartly, was the first to show out from an even dispatch. He was displaced by The Atom at the end of two furlongs, but the latter was done with at the straight entrance, and Proud Knight was again left in charge, entering the home run from Smithereens, Pound Note, Solfello, and Roi de Val. Proud Cnight had the race won inside the and beat Impertinence by a length, with Honeycomb a length and a half away. Smithereens was fourth, in front of Bonrose, Pound Note, Camisader, and Solfello. The winner gave promise earlier in the season of developing into a good performer, but in each of his previous races he closed up after occupying a forward position into the straight. In this event, however, he sustained his run to the end. and recorded a popular victory for tne Riccarton trainer, R. Longley. Impertinence came from a long way to

gain second money, while Honeycomb was sent back after the start and was at the tail of the field at the end of the first furlong. Smithereens ran a promising race, as did Bonrose, a stable mate of the winner. Another Surprise. First Sight was installed the public choice for the concluding event, the Epsom Handicap, but ho failed to get a good position early and never got within reach of the leading division. Solrose went to the front after two furlongs had been traversed, and led into the straight from Lucy Locket, Pangolin, Buoyant, and Rotor, with King Midas moving up. The last-named threw out a determined challenge to Solrose in the run to the post, and in a punishing finish Solrose stayed on to gain the verdict by a head margin. Lucy Locket was three lengths away, with Rotor close up, in front of Buoyant.- Pangolin, First Sight, and Royal Game, with Prickles last. Solrope's win was the second surprise of the dav. Her only form this season to recommend her was, when she ran fourth in the Wainui Handicap at the recent Wellington Meeting. King Midas has been a cor,r;tent performer this term, and <J'-1 w.*-' in this race to get so close to the winner after being well back at the turn. Lucy Locket and Rotor ran moderately well, but both showed the effects of their New Zealand Cup effort. Sir Roy and Gay Sonnet were in the middle of the held throughout, and finished well back, while Prickles, after showing prominence at the home turn faded out in the straight. Spean Bridge and Rascal were never prominent.
