CANTERBURY FIRE BRIGADES.
DEMONSTRATION AT SUMNER. i The Canterbury Provincial Fir® Brigades' Association's biennial demonstration commenced in St. Leonard's Park, Sumner, yesterday. There was a good attendance of firemen from Addington, Lyttolton, Now Brighton, Temuka, and Waimate, most of them entering two teams, A and B. The programma included one, three, four,' mid tiveiqen events, that for four (nen being; a motor ovent. There was also a schoolboys' coupling event. The park, under the supervision of the looal brigade and with the assistance of the. Borough Council, had been specially prepared. Activities commenced shortly after 8 o'oloek, and tho organisation proved thoroughly satisfactory. The first demonstration after the formation of the Association was. held in 1917. • The following were the oilloials; Referee, Es-l3ngineer W. L. McPheraon; starters, ExI Captain E. A. O'MnHey and Mr F. Kennard; ! judges, Lieutenant W. B. Fulley, Superintendent W: Carson, Messrs E. Burroughs, H. Hessey, R. Burns, A. Mun'die, and W, Taomey; examiners, Superintendent G. McGregor, C. Kirk, Secretary B. Jones, W. Stephens, A. Bambery, and J. McDonald; timekeepers, Messrs J, Nnttall, W. Juriss, G. Wilson, O. H. Nicholls, and G, Jones, and Superintendent R. Stokes; ground marshal, Foreman J. R. Williams; clerk of scales, Mr W. Hall; field secretary, Mr Robert B, Hean; tipe-board stewards', Firemen F, Barnott and Ludlow. Tho results wera:— Oilberd Memorial, onounan coupling; & rs ' prize £2, second prize £l, third prize Addington A, time 68 4-ssec, 1; Addington Bi 72 4-ssec, 2; Sumner B, 78 l-ssec, 3. Three-men Hose and Standpipe Event: first pri?e #4, second prize £2, third prize il-r-Sumner A, 38sec, 1; Addington B, 29sec, 2; Addington A, 32sec, 3. Four-men Hoso and Standpipe Event; first prize £5, second prize £2 10s, third prize £1 10s—Sumner, 54 4-ssec (a record previously held by Addington), 1:' Addipgton, 55 3-ssee, 2; Lyttelton, 63 4-Ssec, 3. Five-men Hose and Standpipe Event; first prize £6, second prize £4, third prize #2—Lyttelton, 40eec, 1 Addington Railway 41 2-5, 2; Sumner, 41 4-sseo, 3. 3?our-mon Motor Event (3) —All teams were disqualified Schoolboys' Coupling Event; prizes, first, second, and third, medals—L. Scrivener (New Brighton) 1, F. West (New Brighton) 2, R. Carson (Lyttelton) 8, E. McLachlan (Sumner) 4. Officials' Race—J. Nuttall 1, J. Martin 2, H. Hessey 8. Sumner Shield—Addington Railway, 26 points. 1; Sumner, 05 points, 2; Lyttelton, 20 points, 3. New Brighton also competed, Sumner was a favourite for this event and only failed by one point to wrest tho prize from Addington, who havo now won it seven years in succession. Amongst those present was Supt. H. Willott, of Waimato, the president of the Association. There wjis a little disappointment at the effect cf counter-attractions, but much satisfaction at the way the visitors were entertained by the local brigade. The officials worked hard to maic the day a complete success.
