PERSONAL. (SPECIAL TO THE PBESS.) GREYMOUTH, September* 11. Mrs P. Freebury, who has been visiting Mrs W. Diedriohs (Kokatahi), returned to-day to Oamoru. Mr and Mrs A. Newman, of Picton, who have been visiting, .friends in Greymouth, left on return to their home this morning, via Christchurch. Lieutenant Mcintosh, of the Defence •Department,, who was operated on in Lewishain Hospital some few weeks ago, has recovered sufficiently to enable him to return to Greymouth. Mr T. P. Lalor left this morning on a visit to Christchurch. . Miss ■H. Waterston, who _ has been visiting friends in Punakaiki, returned to-day to Christchurch. Mrs J. Plato, who has been visiting her parents, Mr and Mrs A. Torrance, left to-day on return to Dunedin. Mr H. R. Young, of .Westport, left to-day for Christchurch, where he will .attend a meeting of directors of the Westland Paper and Pulp Company, the object being the utilisation of West Coast timbers for the manufacture of paper and cardboard. i Miss S. Atkinson arrived at Westport last evening from Christchurch to attend the funeral of her late father, Mr S. J. Atkinson.

The marriage was solemnised by the Eev. Father Lordan at St. Patrick's Church, Kumara, last week of Miss \Vera McDiarmid, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs A. McDiarmid, of Dillman's road, Kumara, and Mr Charles Frederick Larcombe, youngest son of Mr and Mrs W. Larcombe, Shakespeare street, Greymouth.

Costs amounting to' £4 13s were awarded to the plaintiff. ■ Alfred Ernest Smith appeared in custody on two charges of passing two valueless cheques of £3 and £lO, drawn on the Bank of New Zealand, Hokitika, and Bank of . New .South Wales, Greymouth, respectively. Accused, who was not represented by counsel, elected to be dealt with, summarily, pleading guilty. Detective H. 0. Murch, who arrested Smith, isaid that the latter Was an -■ habitual criiioiinal. He was released on license on. March sth this year, and the license was cancelled on May 22nd. Spring Creek Sawmill. Work at the Spring Creek Company's, sawmill, near Stillwater, has been suspended for the past three weeks; owing to the laying of a tramway into a new patch of bush. Tile mill will resume cutting as soon as the necessary arrangements for \ transport are effected. Motorists' Miraculous Escape. Two Blackball residents, Messrs Harry Wootton and James Gourlay, had a miraculous escape , this afternoon. They were motoring from Blackball to Kokiri, when the steering gear of the car got out of ~ control at a point on the road about three miles from the latter township, with the result that the car plunged over the bank, turning two somersaults and landing upside down" againstan old tree which cheeked its further descent into a deep, gully. Owing to wet k weather the side curtains were drawn. ■ Both of the occupants, who yrere imprisoned/ in the car, were, pinned underneath, but they escaped Without a scratch. After the perfect weather experienced yesterday, West Coasters were looking forward to more seasonable, conditions, but the sky clouded* up suddenly again I last evening and intermittent showers fell during the night and this morning Heavy showers fell during the after-' noon and early . part' of' the.ievening, but conditions improved later and the rain ceased. :
