COMPETITIONS.

ASHBURTON. ATI swsions of the Ashburton Competition Society's fourth annual festival, which was opened in the Theatre Royal yesterday, were well attended. The entries, which totalled 735, are a record. The judges are as follows:—Vocal and instrumental, Mr Hutchens (Wanganui); elocution, Mr J. F. Montague (Auckland;; dancing, Miss May Thorn (Mataura). The accompanist is Mr D. A. Smith (Ashburton;, and the piper Mr Geo. Robertson. Mr T. M. Clark is stage director. i'rior to the commencement ot the evening session the president (Mr W. \V. Oarton) introduced the Mayor (Mr R- Galbraith) and the judges. The Mayor said that tms year the Society bad commenced the system oi giving scholarships and these be awarded for elocution, pianoforte, and singing. In thia way it was hoped to encouragethe people of Ashburton to take un interest in the competitions. He referred to tho loss the Society had suffered in the death of Mr Jomes Cow, a vice-president, and expressed the sympathy of the Society at the unfortunate accident that had befallen Mr A. H. Todd while assisting with the preliminary arrangements the previous evening. Mr T. M. Clark also spoke and the judges returned thanka for the welcome accorded them. Tho Woßt Coast Competitions Society was favoured with beautiful weather to-day for tho opening of its annual festival. Tho competitions will be continued each morning, afternoon, and evening throughout the week, and will conclude with the demonstration of prize-winners on Tuesday week, September 4th. The judges for this year's festival fire: Messrs W. Meldrum, S.M. (Greymouth), oratory and debating; Clement May (Wellington), elooution, and H. Temple-White (Wellington), vocal and instrumental music. Mr May is making his first visit to the West Coast. Gold medals have been offered for the best all round musician, tho most promising vocalist, and the most promising pianist. In addition, Chappell and Co., Ltd., have given a gold medal for a class" who will sing "A Song. Remembered." The club interest will again be an important feature, teams having been entered by St. Columba, United, and Trinity in the senior sections, and by St. Columba in the junior section. The present holders of the cups are: Senior, St. Columba; junior, Trinity. The festival was officially opened by Mr H., F. Doogan (president) this evening, when there was a large attendance at the Town Hall. Results: Prepared Reading, "The Two Roads men 16 and under 21— T. Tarrant, 96 points, 1; O.
