SHIPPING NOTES.

The ; Is expected to-morrow from the south to take in cargo for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Waikato. . . The • John should arrive on Sunday from New Plymouth. She loads on Monday for Wellington, Wanganui, and New Plymouth. The Kahika is now due to-day from Timaru to load; for, Napier and- Gisborne. She sails this afternoon, via Wellington. The Storm is timed to take in cargo here to-morrow for Wellington and Wanganui. ; . The Cygnet may arrive to-night from Kaikoura and Wellington. -At present she is timed to sail to-morrow for Wellington and Kaikoura. The Gale has been delayed in the north, and is now, expected to-day. from Wellington. She sails later;for Dunedin.and Timaru. The Wairau is due on Sunday from Blenheim, and sails on Monday on the return trip. .."•.. •• ■The Kaitoke should arrive to-day from Wellington, and is to take in cargo for Auckland. She should sail on Monday, via Picton.

The Wingatai.is an expected arrival from the. south on -Wednesday, when she will load for Auckland.

The oil tanker Paua was an arrival yesterday afternoon after a protracted trip from Wellington. ■-.";• The Huapehu is due this morning from Port Chalmers to .continue discharge. --' The Mahana is expected ihis morning from Wellington. She has London cargo for discharge. ■ The; Margaret W. is now due on Tuesday to- . load- for' Tanranga, Thames, and Whangarei. ,--.-• Mr R. C. Line chartered steamer Kazemba will leave New York <on August 28th, for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. The Federal Company's steamer Cambridge arrived at Auckland at 6.40 a.m. on Tuesday from ■ Liverpool. The vessel is to leave the northern port next Tuesday for Napier, Wellington, and Lyttelton. _ The New Zealand. Shipping Company, Ltd., advises that the' Ruapehu has been delayed at I Port. Chalmers owing to rain, and _ will not reach Lyttelton till to-morrow morning.

■ . ■ . Notes.. ■■: The Waipiata arrived form ■ Oamara yesterday, and will complete loading to-day before sailing for. Lyttelton, Wellington,. and Auckland. .. The" Storm, is expected from Oamara today to load for Wellington and Wanganui, via Lyttelton. . The : Progress is due from Donedin to-day to discharge and load general cargo before sailing for Wellington, New Plymouth, and Waikato, via Lyttelton. The Golden Forest has been delayed, and will arrive from IJelson to-day to discharge overseas cargo and load general cargo before sailing for Dunedin to-morrow. The Paua is oxpected from Wellington tomorrow to dis \afge bulk petrol before returning to Wellington on Monday. The Waikouaiti is due from Wellington on Sunday, and after discharging and loading general cargo will'sail on Monday for Dunedin.

Nearly 3000 miles of canals are in use in England. A pair of 4d deep blue Cape of Good Hope-stamps, were sold for £3BO at Harmer's, Old Bond street, a few weeks ago. The stamps are only lightly , post-marked. Only one or two other pairs are known.
