NOTES ON THE RACING.

Several Mishaps. The opening event, the Hnnt Club Cup, was a most unsatisfactory race, only three of the candidates standing up. Eangi Sarto was sent out favourite, and appeared to have the race in hand when he ran up beside the leader, Captain Sarto, at the brush at the top of the straight, but crashed at the fence. Falooso was the early leader, but fell at the top brush, which also' brought down Hyperion and Donation, and Message Boy ran off. Captain Sarto and Tycho were -then left in charge and. passed the stand together clear of Mataipuke, Eangi Sarto, and Ehoboro. Captain Sarto had Tycho beaten after passing the far turn, and it was at this point that Eangi Sarto, making up his ground rapidly, challenged the leader, but fell as stated. Tycho, then running in second place, also threw out. These eliminations allowed Captain Sarto to canter home a winner by over a hundred yards from Mataipuke, with Ehoboro, who tailed the field throughout a similar distance away. Eangi Sarto was remounted and completed the course.

Captain Sarto recorded a popular victory for his veteran owner-trainer, but his path was made easy by Eangi Sarto's mistake. The latter was asked to make his run too soon, and the forcing tactics adopted brought about his downfall. The race was a poor exposition for qualified hunters, but the unusual, going probably had a lot to do, with the. mishaps. Eoyal Lineage was again made the medium of heavy speculation in the Woolston Handicap, but had to be content with a third placing. Greyfinch, Meadow Lark, and Kalos were 'the first prominent, and the last-named showed the way on to the course proper from Greyfinch, Meadow Lark, Smithereens, d,nd Waterlow. Greyfinch and Meadow Lark were done with inside' the distance, and Kalos was still in front opposite the big stand. Smithereens, always well placed, close to the leaders, then made, his effort, and soon placed the issue beyond doubt, .beating Kalos comfortably by a good length.. The favourite had every chance in the straight, but could only struggle on in third place, a length away. Narrative Was fourth,, iii front of Waterlow, Meadow Lark, and Waihemo.

Smithereens is the property of Mr E. W. Spencer, the president of the Rc.efton Jockey Club. He ran a good race, close up. to the placed 'division in the Avonhead Handicap on the opening, day, but was poorly supported in : this.event, and paid the, biggest dividend, of the Meeting, to' date.- Kalos showed improved form, and, beat the rest of the field.as easily as the winner beat him. ' Royal Lineage was in the middle of a bunch following the leaders into the straight, but showed little fight over the concluding stages.

Evergreen Tuki. The Beaufort Steeplechase Handicap was also a somewhat disappointing race, 'only tho three placed horses finishing. Wiltshire was a staunch favourite, but weight and going found' a weakness in liim, and he never actually looked like a winner. Jovial was the first to the initial fence, and soon opened up a gap from . Badiate, Banui, Tuki, Wiltshire, and Dubiiis, with The Babe tailing off. Radiate crashed into the wing of .the first of the stand double. Jovial was still bowling along in front to Cutts 's fence, but • made his only bad jump with dire results., This -mishap loft Banui in charge, and he jumped the Kennels double a length in front of Tuki, with Wiltshire about five lengths away. Dubious,, well beaten at the time, fell at, the first, of the double, and : The B|abe was pulled up. Wiltshire made a promising move up to the leaders approaching'the top brushy but Banui still held his.advantage, to the last fence, closely followed ;by Tuki and Wiltshire.' Banui was first over, but once on the flat, Tuki wore him. down, and beat him by a length and -a half. Wiltshire had no. final effort left in the straight, and Avas a very tired horse at the ■ post, 'three lengths away, from Banui.

Tuki's performance, was full of merit, and the public gave him. a rousing-re-ception. He jumped evenly throughout and gave Ellis a pleasant ride. Banui ran better than generally' anticipated, in spite of covering a lot of extra ground,,and only submitted to defeat in the final run home. The result may have been "different if; Jovial had completed' the courße, as he was. going very well at. the time of his fall. Dubious and The Babe were outclassed, the former showing : signs of distress long before he fell.

i Craigmore Impresses, The Spreydon Hurdle Bace Handicap resulted inan easy victory for the Dun-edin-owned Craigmore, who was ridden by J. Kerr, owing to the stable horse■preceding race.. Oarinthia, forced paceVgoing out of the- straight the first time; closely attended- by Craigmore, and this pair opened up a fifteen-lengths' break going along the back from Boyal Land, Lady Gay, ; Lady Passenger, and Nucleus. There was little change to the far turn, where Carinthia weakened ancle Nucleus made a forward move into second' jilaue. Craigmore was! well clear of and Carinthia at the straight entrance, and jumping the last fence well,*went' on to win by. four lengths from "Nucleus. Eangiawhio finished on the best of the tiring remainder and gained third money, a length away from Nucleus. Lady Gay was ..a poor fourth, with'Carinthia, Boyal Landj and Lady Passenger; strung' out.. The third,fav-y oufitei Quincoma, did not last long, falling heavily at the first fence. , Craigmore gav.e a 1 splendid exhibition throughout, and canied out the promise he showed at the D.unedin Winter Meeting. Nucleus was unable to keep pace with the leaders over the early part,, and although she ran a creditable race she' had no chance of overhauling the winner. Bangiawhio was a long way back practically throughput, but finished on welL iiady Gay was, never dangerons, while Boyal Land, with conditions to hi# liking,,gave a poor exhibition. Lady Passenger stroek a hurdle heavily at the back* and then tailed the-field for-the rest of /the,journey. Nukumai Win. The Grand National' Hurdle Bace was a most interesting contest, and gave the ten-year-old gelding Nukumai a good addition to his longest, of sue cesses in heavy going- and under big weights. The bracketed pair, iced Fuchsia and Peneus, carried over four hundred tickets more than Nukumai, who was 130 chances ahead of Beau Cavalier. The last-named soon rushed to the front, and led over the first jump from Scion, Peneus, and Brigadier Bill. Going round the top, Beau Cavalier increased his lead, and passingJhe stand was well clear of Peneus, Scion, and Bod Fuchsia, followed by Nukumai, Ponri, and Brigadier Bill, with Kilburn and-'Gaze last. Scion made a bad jump at the stand jump, but made a good recovery. Beau Cavalier was just clear of Peneus going out of the straight, with Scion, Bed 'Fuchsia, and Nukumai close up, Gaze still being in the rear. Peneus fell at the hurdle at the mile post, and Bed ■. Fuchsia followed Beau Cavalier to the Kennels fence and headed him over the jump. Gaze .at tms stage went from last to first, jumpinp clear of ,Bed Fuchsia'at:the fence five-fuflong post, where Beau Cavalier, a beaten fell. G™ B ed

his advantage rounding the top from Bed Fuchsia, with Nukumai,. closing up, next, followed by Kilburn, Brigadier Bill, and Pouri. Gaze entered the straight clear of Nukumai and Bed Fuchsia, but before the .final obstacle was encountered it could be plainly seen that Gaze was labouring, and that Nukumai had the race in hand. Jumping the fence in front of Gaze, he was not asked to do his best to canter home a winner by three lengths from Gaze, who was four lengths in front of Bed Fuchsia, with Pouri a length away next. Kilburn, Brigadier Bill, and Scion followed at intervals in that order. Nukumai's victory was received with much cheering. Although the margin at the post was not big, he was practically only cantering over the last two furlongs, and had Gaze beaten at the .top of the straight. The latter was very much distressed in the run home, and this could be accounted for by his herculean effort in passing alTthe field in the space of a couple of furlongs. Bed Fuchsia showed promise sis furlongs from home, but he was unable to show his best form in the heavy going. Pouri was never within striking distance of the- front division, while Brigadier Bill, although giving a good exhibition of jumping, was a beaten horse a long way from home. Kilburn became prominent rounding the top turn in the final round, but failed to runon, and Scion had his chances jeopardised by his bad effort in the first circuit.

Chelone's Easy Win. Volant was the only withdrawal from the August Handicap, and in a fairly even betting race, Kaiti, Chelone, and Taboo .headed the investments, and the three named filled the places. From a good start Royal Saxon was the first to show in front at the false rail, and led into the straight from Chelone, Royal Game, Kaiti, Tuahine, Taboo, and Antrim Boy. At the distance Chelone shot to* the front, and without being challenged ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Taboo, who in a good finish with Kaiti. gained second money, : by the narrowest of margins. Tuahine was a moderate fourth, just in front of Royal Game, and the nest to finish were Battle Colours, Miss Winkle, Royal Saxon, and Fairy Herald. Chelone followed up a good race for six furlongs in the Winter Cup by outclassing. the opposition iti this event, and the only public interest in "the finish was the duel between Taboo and Kaiti, who rdfeed neck and neck over the last hundred yards. Tuahine showed . improving form by being one of the leading division throughout and finishing the best of those outside the placed horses. Royal Game was prominent at the turn into the course proper, but faded out, as did Royal Saxon,.who closed up very suddenly after looking like a possibility at the false rail..

A Feilding Success. The Sumner Handicap provided a good tussle between Pangolin and Marjoram, the latter getting home in. the last stride. Pangolin was.the first to show, out, and he and Grand National piloted the field round the far turn, Solfello and Beau Geste being, most prominent of the remainder. Pangolin led into' the straight : from Grand National, Solfello, and Marjoram, and. appeared to be winning comfortably, but Marjoram on the rails threw out a strong challenge and, staying on better, secured the judge's verdict on the post. Solfello was always in the picture, and was only a length away in third place, and then followed Terj, Princess Mafalda, Membo, Beau Geste, and Grand National. ■ ■-...

Pangolin was again responsible for breaking up the field by the pace-he established, and-he and Marjoram had the finish to themselves. The latter ran second to King Mart over seven furlongs at Trenthain last month, and his staying ability gained him the; honf ours. He had done very, Httle; fastii work since; coming'to ,fii, ccafton~ owing.' to knee trouble, from which he suffers, but the ailment evidently did not affect him in the soft ground. > Solfello ran a surprisingly good race,-and waß.in the, firing-line right up to the finish. Teri did not reproduce his Winter Cup form, and Quarterdeck was never prominent. Boy, trained at Feilding, was the medium of strong support owing to being adjudged an adept on a heavy track, but he. also was not sighted.

Another Close •Finish. The programme concluded with the Islington Handicap, from which First . Sight was withdrawn, owing to the track conditions; . In. by far the biggest betting pool of the,, day, Black Mint was made a two hundred ticket better favourite than Town Bank and Eotor, who were evenly Again the public were substantially correct in their judgment, as the places were filled by the three named; The race waß full of interest, and the finish between Town Bank and Eotor was a fitting finale to the day's proceedings. The honours of the race were with the latter, who was near the tail, of -the field at; the,,six, ' furlong '?post.,; He ploughed his way through from the top of the straight, and- it was only in the last stride that he tasted defeat by Town Bank. The latter was always in a handy position in behind the leaders,. and had a good passage throughout. It appeared that Eotor had been beaten nearing the post, but he responded gamely to vigorous horsemanship, and his grit got him there*.. The pair flashy ed past the post together, and only the judge could decide who had won. Black Mint was also one of the unfortunate ! runners, as he had only, one horse behind him after three furlongs had been covered. He was then rushed round the field to thealeading ..division, and was actually in? front alongside the pacemaker,. Gold Mint;- -.at:• the top of the straight. He had little left in reserve to ■; sustain his effort, and - finished in third place a length and a half away. Bisox was not prominent until the concluding stages, when she executed good work fc> follow Black Mint' over the line. Chickwheat'was next. He was one of; the leaders >at the turn' for home, but failed' over the finishing stages. His stable-mate, Gold Mint, created a surprise by getting away on equitable terms, and assuming the lead at the mile post. He piloted the field' into the straight, but was done with at the distance, and finished behind Chickwheat, and in front of Kilmiss, Atareria, Hoylake, Overdrawn, Nincompoop, Shandre, and Thorndale.
