FARMERS' PROBLEMS.

MR R. B. TENNENT'S GOOD WORK. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, July 30. The farming community generally will consider that Mr R. B. Tennent, who now takes the post of Superintendent bf the Fields Division of the Department of Agriculture for Otago and Southland, has earned the advancement which this executive position means in the service. Only those who have found themselves up against this or ,that problem or disappointment on the farm can be expected to appreciate the value of the services Mr Tennent has rendered to the various districts of Otago. . He has done a great deal to help the cause of scientific farming, and last year embarked upon an experimental project which had for its object the collecting of reliable data in respect to the best types of fertilisers for the various soil ana climatic conditions prevailing in Otago. This entailed the laying down of over 40 plots in all corners of the province and each had to_ be top-dressed and harvested in a particularly complicated manner. The first year's results were a tribute to the organising ability of Mr Tennent. The combating of disease in cereal crops in North Otago, root crops in South Otago, the culture and management of lucerne in Central Otago, and the establishment and care of irrigated pastui-es and lucerne ' have been only a few of the contributions he has made to + he cause of better farming in the south-
