CAPTAIN COOK.
SITE OF HIS BIRTHPLACE,
(raox oto owx cobbispojidmjt.)
LONDON, May 30.
On May 23rd, there was a public ceremony at Middlesbrough to mark the. opening of the Stewart Park, Marton, a grass and woodland beauty spot, given to the town by Mr Thomas D. Stewart, an ex-Mayor, and Mrs Stewart. On thi3 estate was the cottage in which Captain Cook was born. The new park, of over 100 acres, surrounds Marton Hall, once the residence of the late Mr H. W. F. Bolckow, 'who was the first Mayor and first member of Parliament for the town. The hall is included in the deed of git*. Another interesting possession which will now be the town's is a handsome granite'vase in the new park grounds, marking the spot where the famous explorer was born. Unfortunately, th<» cottage was, not preserved, or it would have been the central shrine in a senes of pilgrimages which are being arranged in the Cleveland district for th<* bicentenary celebrations of Cook s birth, next October.
