RUGBY LEAGUE. OTA6O CRITICISES SELECTION METHOD. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DtJNEDIN, July 8. At a meeting of the Otago Kugby League it was decided to forward to the Canterbury League an expression o£ regret regarding the method adopted by.it in connexion with the selection of the team to represent Otago and Canterbury against Buller and West Coast in Christehurch on July 11th. In the course of the discassion it was stated that tho visit of Mr Worrall last Saturday came as a surprise to players, and also that the Otago selector had had no opportunity of seeing the Canterbury players in action. It was decided to send Mr Watson to Christehurch with the Otago players for the match on the 11th inst., to enable him to take part in the selection of the South Island team.

ASSOCIATION. CHATHAM CUP DRAW. The draw for the first round of the Chatham Cup was made at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Football Association, and resulted: — Western v. Nomads, at English Park (Mr Thistle v. Technical, at Spreydon Park (Mr H. Smyth). New Brighton and St. Albans, byes. There were present at last night 8 meeting; Messrs 0. Bascond (chairman), W. E. Leodley, R. McLachlan, W.. WardelL J. Jennings, H. Jackson, E. Lancaster, ■W. Duncan, J. Stout, J. Burgess, H. Smyth, and R. B. The St, Albans Club wrote protesting against the playing of junior players in the light-weight grade. It was obviously unfair. The letter was referred to the Schools Committee. _ . , . The headmaster of the West Christehurch District High School (Mr L. P. Pegler) wrote stating that he would neither object nor approve of boya from the school playing Association football after school hours. What irames the boys played out of school hours was a matter for themselves. The New Zealand Football Council wrote that Auckland was quite willing to play Canterbury, at Auckland, for the English trophy. A good gate was anticipated. Mr Bunt said that if the expenses of the tour would be guaranteed by the Auckland Football Association, then the match would take place in Auckland. It was left for the Finance Committee to decide. The chairman of the Match Committee reported that the match between Nomads and Thistle B having resulted in an unexpected win for Nomads, it would be necessary to play match between Nomads and Excelsior to decide who should be in the Junior A competition. If Nomads should win, the match clayed last Saturday between Excelßior and Sorevdon would, have to be counted as a friendly Should Excelsior win, it would stand as a competition match. No points would be given for next Saturday's match.

Bough Play. Rough play in the Villa-Thistle fixture last Saturday week was the subject of comment. The referee (Mr Wilson) had given a verbal report. He said that under other conditions he might have tßken action, and sent some players off, but under prevailing circumstances he did not deem it wise to take any action. , Mr Duncan: Someone will get lulled in play like that yet. That will be the end The matter was dropped here.

DISPUTE IN AUCKLAND. ADVICE TO THISTLE CLUB. (PRESS ASSOCIATION TMJIGBAM.) WELLINGTON, July 3. Following the message published to-day from Auckland that the Thistle Association Football Club, which recently seceded from the Auckland Football Association, had decided to foi;m a separate association, to be known as the Auckland City and Suburban Football Association, and to mate direct application for affiliation to the Scottish Football Association a statement was made on the subject by Mr F. Campbell, chairman of the Council of the New Zealand Football Association. "I can tell the Thistle Club from the start," said Mr Campbell, "that there is not a hope that the Scottish Association will accept affiliation from them, any more than the New Zealand Football Association would accept affiliation from a Scottish Club which had had a difference of opinion with the controlling body. It shows clearly that those who advised the Thistle Club in this matter have little knowleaee of the constitution of the Association same. Even supposing they could do as they propose, they would not be. able to get »ames with any club under associations affiliated to the N.Z.F.A., and any clubs or players slaving for or against the club which has for the present broken away from the controlling body, would come under theSban of the New Zealand Council, which would mean suspension. The clubs and playe/s playms under the auspices of the proposed new association , would also put themselves outside th Mr 0 Campbell urged that the proper course fnr the Thistle Club was again to affiliate -.1, th* Auckland Association, and appeal To'the New Zealand Council against the decision of the Auckland Association, so that the whole matter could be reviewed. Direct acS" O L,« club management was not m the best & of the sport, and was not the '"*„„: attitude one expected from those ensporting atmuae Zealand Council, """Si,? to «bt would not asree to such a nee ™«l and plavers in Auckland would be wdP.«M to consider their position before i l£~ forV against a club or clubs which broken awfy from the Auckland Association.
