SCHOOL COMMITTEES.

* ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL MEETING. The annual meeting of the Christchurch School Committees' Association was held last night, Mr G. P. Purnell ■presiding. Mr Purnell brought up the question of' educational films, stating that the class of production being madle was quite worthy of support. The films had the approval of everyone connected with education, and he was satisfied that they were a step in the right direotion. A letter on the subject was read from the Education Board stating that no attempt at compulsion would be permitted. A short discussion followed, and the meeting received the letter. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows: —President, Mr J. Stuart; vice-presidents, Messrs T. W. West and W. P. Spenoer; secretary, Mr A. A. Cornelius: treasurer, Mr C. S. Thompson; auditor, Mr E. H. Andrews; Executive Committee, Messrs 6. P. Purnell, 80, Odell, J. J. Brown, J. Donn. H. Gunns, and H. Rosindale. Tho proposed schools' afforestation scheme was tho subject of an address by Mr W. H. Winsor. He commenced by saying that an endeavour had been madle to acquire for a long term a block of land at Bottle Lake controlled by the Selwyn Plantations Board. It was 119 acres in area and about six miles from Cathedral square. The block had a frontage of 20 chains to a hard road, half a mile from the beach, extending north for a quarter of a mile, and) three-quarters of a mile long. "Tho idea," said Mr "Winsor, "is that if we could procure this property we would plant one acre per school per year." The trees would be grown at the school nurseries, taken to the area, holes dug, and the trees planted. This work, he suggested), should be carried out by the scholars themselves under the supervision of the teachers or members of the school committees. The cost would total about £2OO, so that if there were 20 schools it would amount to £lO for each school. He concluded his remarks by urging the Association to co-operate with all others interested in an endeavour to have the scheme brought to fruition^
