RANFURLY SHIELD. THREE CHALLENGES RECEIVED. QUESTION OF DATES. Members of the Canterbury Bugby Union <lj«cussed at some length, last night, the question of Hanfurly Shield match dates, three challenges having been received, and the prior claim of South Canterbury concerned the Union to some extent. The South Canterbury challenge was received approximately a month before those from Hawke'a Bay and Wairarapa, but the UDion gave Wairarapa the preference *o as to fall in with their southern tour anangenient. . ... The point waa raised by Mr S. F. Wilson as to whether Canterbury was in a position to honour South Canterbury's first challenge. The New Zealand Union wrote regarding South Canterbury's challenge, asking the Canterbury Union to suggest a suitable date. The Union stated that so far it had received no challenges other tUai that from South Canterbury. It asked the Canterbury Union lo send advice of the arrangements already made in connexion with the Shield. The actual challenges already in the Canterbury Union's hands were received on the following dates:—South Canterbury, April 21st; Hawke'a Bay, May 16th; and Wairarapa, May 19th. The chairman, Mr A. E. McFhail: Are we going to put South Oantevbury in firet? Mr S. F. Wilson: We ha\'e a fixture arrange! already for July 18th. The Competitions Committee suouid submit a report as far as the senior competition gam«a ara concerned Games must be arranged for those players who will not Ire playing in the representative side, and in the meantime it is a question ..hether We have to honour South Canterbury's claim to the firet challenge match ) The meeting decided to write to the South Canterbury Union stating that, the Canterbury Union had already arranged one fixlure, somewhat reluctantly, owing to the oai'hneus in tho season, but chiefly to suit the Wairarapa proposed southern tour. Canterbury, it was stated, would find it difficult to fib in a date for South Canterbury, before July 18th. Hawke'e Bay wrote issuing a challenge for the Ranfurly Shield, stating that it was aware of Canterbury's difficulty in regard to fixtures. It suggested September 12th as a date for a match in Christchurch, conditional on Canterbury holding the shield on that date. Mr Wilson moved that tho challenge be, accepted. Mr C. S. MsCully said that there would thus be two Wednesday gamed for the shield."What about our Saturday patrons?" he asked Mr Wilson: The position cannot be helped. We must take our share of Wednesday matches with South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland, to fit in with the programme of northerr touring 'earns. The Saturdays are well booked with local fixtures, and the North v. South Island and 1 a test match. The chairman: We are giving our patrons the very best fare. Almost all the Banftirly shield matches will be played on Wednesday if wo hold the shield. The Saturday patrons will be well catered for with the North v. South game and the test against the Waratahs. Mr Wilson: We may lose £4OO over the arrangement. The Union decided to accept tho Hawke'a Bay Union's challenge on the date specified A letter was reoeived from the Wairarapa Union, specifying July 18th : for its shield match against Canterbury,' at Lancaster Park, and the challenge was confirmed. A letter was-reoeived frcm tbe ManawatuHorowhenua Union confirmir.g August 11th as the date for the Manawhenua v. Canterbury game, and tho challenge was agreed to.
