PERSONAL. (SPKCUL TO THB PBISB.) GREYMOUTH, May 13. Bishop Brodie arrived yesterday from Christehureh. This afternoon his Lordship opened the newly-erected Catholic Presbytery at Kumara. Miss A. Woods has resigned her position on the staff of the Greymouth telephone exchange, after two years' service, and will be relieved on June 19th. Mr L. W. Robertson, Railwav Locomotive Engineer for the South" Island, returned yesterday to Christehureh. Miss Elsie Grant left yesterday for Wellington, where she has received an appointment. Miss Maud Ferguson (Wanganui) has been appointed assistant mistress to the Grey Main School, and will commence duty on May 21st. Among the outward passengers by yesterday's express were: MesdamesW. Pring, and L. McCullam, Miss H. Nash, Messrs G. Ashby, H. Ellery, and A. McLaughlin. Misses Seebeck (3), of Kumara, left to-day on a holiday trip to the South Westland Glaciers. Mr H. E. McDonagh, of the Railway workshops, Westport, will leave next week on transfer to Addington. Mr and Mrs McDonagh were tendered a farewell social by the congregation of St. John's Church, Westport, on Friday evening, when they were presented with a set of stainless cutlery. Miss V. Catchpole (Wellington) is visiting relatives in. Westport. In view of her approaching marriage, Miss Forsyth, who for the past eight years has been organist of the Woodstock Presbyterian Church, and superintendent of the Sunday School, was tho recipient of presentations of a hand-painted fruit dish, and copper jardiniere from the lady members of the congregation and the Sunday School pupils respectively. News was received of tho sudden death at her residence, Hataitai, Wellington, on Friday afternoon of Mrs Charlotte Harris, wife of Mr Steven Harris. Deceased, who was well-known in the Hokitika district, is survived by her husband, two daughters, and . one son. Mesdames J. Lincoln and J. McDonald, of Hokitika, are sisters of deceased.

Mrs W. D. Revington (Auckland), who has been visiting relatives in Greymouth, left yesterday for Christehureh. Prior to leaving the staff of the Greymouth Technical College in view of her approaching marriage, Miss M, F. Caisley was the recipient of presentations from the staff and pupils. Mr J. Hutton presented Miss Caisley with a silver cake stand with Doulton plates. Miss F. Smitheran presented her with a clock and Miss Marjorie Cambridge, on behalf of the fourth form, with a salad bowl and set of sweet dishes.

Mrs 0. Egden (Christchureh) is the guest of Mrs M. Quinlan (Thompson street). Miss M. Williams, who has been on the nursing staff of the Grey Hospital for several years, left yesterday on a visit to Samoa. Alleged Burglary. Before Mr A. Naylor, J.P., at Greyyesterday, three men, ' John Dunn, James Dunn, and Frederick A. Underhay, who were arrested by Detective Murch at Blackball earlier in the day, were charged that at Paparoa on or about April 30th, they broke into the counting house of the Paparoa Coal Co. and stole stamps and stationery to the-value of £l.'6s 3d. Accused were remanded until Monday. Bail fixed at £25 each, was forthcoming. Native Pigeons. The Acting-Minister for Internal Affairs has drawn the attention of the Westland Acclimatisation Society to the reports in circulation in regard to the illegal shooting of native pigeons, and has asked the Society to take stringent' action against offenders who are found shooting or in the illegal possession of native pigeons. The Westland Society is offering a reward of £5 for information leading to the successful prosecution of any offenders. It is understood that pigeons were fairly numerous prior to the opening of the game shooting season, which does not include the destruction of native pigeons. They are protected all the year round. ■Unemployment Belief Works. With a view to providing relief work for the unemployed at. Hokitika, Mr T. E. Y. Seddon, M.P., has telegraphed to the Minister for Public Works asking for immediate, authority for the spending of the grant for : the Ruatapu-Ma-hinapua road. Hokitika Borough Council. The Hokitika Borough Council met on Friday evening, when there were present: Mr G. A. Perry ' (Mayor), Crs. W. J. Jeffries, D. J. Evans, J. King, G. Heinz, A. E. Elcock, T. W. Duff, A. C. Armstrong, E. W. Heenan, and Dr. E. Teichelmanri.

The Public Works Committee's report recommended that proposals be sent to the Highways Board for widening the main highway in Fitzherbert and Stafford streets at a cost of £420, and that the tar-sealing of these streets be held over until next year. The report was adopted. In accordance with instructions from the Council, Messrs E. W. Holmes and Son, consulting engineers, of Wellington, submitted a lengthy report on the Borough's water supply system, giving the estimated costof repairs to the reservoir and mains at £4400, and suggesting that £7OOO be made available for the whole work. The report was approved. It was agreed that the Borough foreman carry out the work of making temporary repairs to the reservoir. The Mayor's suggestion to start repairing the mains from the lake end was adopted. It was resolved to defer discussion of other portions of the report till a later date.

New River Dredge. The New Eiver Goldmining Company's electrical dredge at Dunganville has closed down, pending a meeting of shareholders at Auckland. Golf. Results of the week-end bogey matches, played at the Omoto links, are as follows:—Seniors: A. K. Smith 5 up, T. E. T. Seddon 3 up, Brown 3 up, McKechnie 2 up, Mathieson 2 up. Juniors: Olney 5 up, Quinn 5 up, Webber all square.
