NOTES ON THE RACING. (SPIOUL TO TH» PEIBS.) ■ '/■ Favourite Beaten, Of tie seven starters in the Novice Stakes,, the Riccarton-trained Light Hearted was made a good favourite, hut he backed away when the barrier was lifted and lost several lengths. He caughfthe field quickly, however, and had a chance at the top of straight, but his rider endeavoured to get through on the rails and was kept there. The ™™%..fW*<£?: las, followed Jazz Queen and Killadie into the straight, but in the final run ho went on to win comfortably by a length from Bowser, who finished on well and beat Killadie by half a length for second money. Craftsman was next, followed, by Light Hearted, Jazz Queen, and, Lady Mid.

Helsler Prevails. ' ■ Roval Land carried half the machine total in fhe Hurdle Handicap, but he had to submit to defeat by Heisler. This pair took charge four furlongs from home and rose at the last fence together, but m the run to the post Heisler finished better than his companion and beat him by a clear length Lord Leslie' was two lengths away third in front of Plying Master, with Gay Queen, who tailed the field throughout, last Hoisler showed improved *<£% »™r h j» race at Hokitika, »"d *taye d on bet er than Royal Land, who made •J*o*t7 jump at ft/concluding obstacle. There was no excuse, however, for Royal Land s defeat. Gay Queen gave a poor display, and seemed incapable Of handling the going.

An Effortless Victory. The well treated Fresco was made a short priced favourite for the Hannan Memorial Handicap, and was never in ganger of _ defeat He showed the way to Carnotfor three furlongs, and then the latter took charge and led into the straight, but Fresco, without h«in« asked to do his best, went on to win dv three quarters of a length. Carnot was font■ tas» te of Killoch, with John Dix beaten off.

QuiUfire Rotuixs'. There was surprising support for Spode in the concluding event, and she carried sixty tickets more than were entrusted to Malmsey. The former was suffering from soreness and was never dangerous, while Malmsey was not well favoured at the start and covered a lot of extra ground. Quillfire took charge from Carrigallen and King Cheops at the straight, but had to be ridden out to stave off a challenge by Malmsey, who was the unlucky contestant. Gold Mint finished well to (ill third berth a neck away from -Malmsey. Carrigallen was next, in front of King Cheops and Spode.
