JUSTICES' ASSOCIATION.

A meeting of the Council of the Canterbury Justices of the Peace Association was held last night in the Chamber of Commerce building. Mr A. Williams presided, and there were present—Messrs C. H. Gilby, F. B. Creswell, F. H. Christian, H. P. Herbert, A. H. Hobbs, Hy. Holland, M.P., H. Herbert Smith, P. R. Climie, J. W. Baty, and J. R. Brunt (registrar). A reply to an application to have two copies of the Justices' list posted for the benefit of the general public in the tram shelter was read, to the effect that the Board did not favour the Association's proposal. The following applications to join the Association were confirmed:—R. Bargrove, John AVilliam Bowden (Ashburton), L. L. Cordery, Michael Grimes, Miss Beatrice M. Harband (New Brighton), Miss Christina Kirk Henderson, John William Hillary, Geo. Wm. Macfarlane, Herbert Clarence v Hurst, Denya Hoare, Peter O'Connell, Clarence A. S. Watson (Hinds). Wm. A. Shemeld (Methven), Sidney R. Wright (Leeston), Henry Salter Williams. The following are among the remits for conference from the Canterbury Association: That this conference recommend the Government to consider the advisability of appointing women patrol officers In the chief cities of the Dominion, their duties to be the same as that of women police, and to deal with matters in the interests of women and children. That is be a recommendation that in all the . large centres Justices' Courts be instituted, where Justices will preside. That specially qualified women Justices 1)9 appointed as visiting Justices to women's reformatories, homes, and prisons. In view of the large number of Justices now on the official roll of the Dominion (nearly 6000), that fewer appointments be made in the future, and when made they should be confined to localities where a Jnstice's services are absolutely essential.
