SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Mr H. Marriott has returned to Timaru from the north. D r- T. H. A. Valintiue (DirectorGeneral of Health, Wellington) and Mr J. Allan (Wellington) are staying at the, Grosvenor Hotel. The Harvest. There will be a number of late threshings this season, as many of the crops in South Canterbury are late. In many cases wheat is still in the stook, and a few of the crops are being cut. iarmers are stacking as fast as possible, as the dry weather is not expected to continue for long. There are a few farms on which wheat is being threshed from the stook. The general out look is good, indications being for an excellent return from South Canterbury crops. Civic Spirit Lacking. '"The civic spirit is lacking in Timaru, and if we do not cultivate it. Timaru will get right off the. map," ssid Cr. r\ D. Virtue at the fortnightly meeting of the Borough Council, when the matter of celebrating the town's diamond jubilee was under discussion. The Deputy-Mayor (Mr A. L. Gee) referred to the gift of Mr McDougall. of Christ'church, towards an art gallery, saying it was the outcome of the civic spirit. Timaru required an art gallery, and he would like to see some of the wealthy people of South Canterbury give one to the town. It was decided to request the Mayor (Mr G. J. Wallace) to convene a publie meeting to discuss a fitting celebration for the jubiler. Borough Water Supply. The restrictions regarding the use of water within the borough have now been lifted, as there is again ample water in the reservoirs. Repairs will shortly be carried out along the waterrace. Magistrate's Court. Arthur Vetcher, who appeared in the Magistrate's Court, before ivfessrs J. F. Arnold and G. Hastie, J.P.'s, charged with being found by night on the premises of the Foresters' Hall, George street, in circumstances which did not disclose the intention to commit a crime, was sentenced to seven days' imprisonment. Star Football Club. Mr A. ,G. Knowles presided over a good attendance : - the annual meeting of the Star Football Club. Reviewing the past season, Mr Knowles stated that it had been perhaps the most successful in the history of the club. There was a large number of new members, he said, and if they were looked after the future of the club was assured. The balance-sheet, showing a credit balance of £56 10s, was adopted. The election of. officers resulted as follows:—President, Mr A. G. Knowles (re-elected); club captain, Mr R. A. Rodgers; delegates to the South Canterbury Rugby Union, Messrs C. Clarkson and A. Shewan, and Rev. Osmers; auditor, Mr W. Roberts. General News. At the monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Power Board yesterday the chairman (Mr J. Kennedy) touched on the visit of the Minister for Public Works (Mr K. S. Williams) to the sites for the Waitaki hydro-electric power plant. Those who had visited the sites had gained a considerable amount of information, he said, and he hoped that the scheme would soon be nearer finality. ■ Although it was impossible to estimate the loss of revenue during the term of the Daylight Saving Act, said the manager of the South Canterbury Electric Power Board, at a meeting of the Board yesterday, there had been an appreciable reduction. The South Canterbury Returned Soldiers' Association has been granted permission to hold Poppy Day on Friday, April 20th. Five building permits, representing a total value of £2705, have been issued by the Borough Council during the past fortnight. The municipal omnibus service receipts for twelve days ended March Bth amounted to £420 Is 9d, as against £435 10s Id for the previous twelve days.
