THE WEATHER. Meteorological observations token at the Magnetic Observatory, Christchurch, at 9.30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on March 13th:

Wind.—C, calm; 1, light; Tot., breeze; f.b., fresh breeze; m.g., moderate gale; g, whole or heavy gale; w, gale of exceptional severity. Weather.—B, blue sky, be the atmosphere clear or heavy; C, clouds, passing clouds; D, drizzling rain; F, foggy; 6. gloomy, dark weather; H, hail; L, lightning; M, misty; 0, overcast, the whole eky covered with thick clouds; P, passing showers; Q, squally; E. rain, continued rain; S, enow; T, thunder; U, ugly, threatening appearance; Z, hazy.

Forecast. There is a depression in the south-west Tasman Sea, and a weak anti-cyclone east of the South Island. Present indications are for south to east winds, later backing to northerlies, light to moderate chiefly, but freshening from Cook Strait southward, generally smooth to moderate seas, but rising round the southern extremity of the Dominion; moderate south-east to north-east winds and moderate seas in the northern Tasman Sea, fresh to strong north-west to west in the central and southern portion, with rather rough seas; some isolated showers at first, but soon becoming temporarily fine generally, later unsettled weather, and some showers in the southern portions of Westland and Otago.
