SHAG ROCK BATHS.

SUMNER COUNCIL'S DECISION. In accordance with a notice of motion,- Cr. B. J. Agar moved at last night's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council: "That the Town.Clerk bo instructed to take the necessary steps to transfer to the Sumner borough for road widening and other purposes that portion of land between the Shag Rock tramway viaduct and the road under the cliffs."

The motion was seconded by Cr. "W. Healev.

Cr. Ager said that in framing this motion he thought that the Council should have jurisdiction over any workcarried out in this area, and that in tlie course of time the road would be straightened out and afford better turnings a.t the Clifton and Shag Bock corners.

The Mayor (Mr W. I-I. Nicholson) said he thought that tJi e matter had been dealt witli previously, and he considered that a definite road widening proposal would have to be brought down. He said that at the present time the average width of. the road was 36 feet and the narrowest portion 26 feet. There was further rccm on cither side to widen bile road, an - ! he considered that if the motion were carriod they would hare to justify it in son'? way. In view of the money already spent there in the partial f ••mation of a swimming pool, he would do his best to see that this money was not thrown away, and he would, therefore, oppose the motion. He wished to point out that the work already done had been carried out under the control of the Minister for Marine. Furthermore, the speaker had received an engineer's report showing that a road widening scheme would cost £9700.

Cr. P. C. Cooper: It is ridiculous putting the motion in this form 1

Cr. T. E. Hamilton said that since it was found necessary to move the trams away from the cliff, it necessarily followed that the road was dangerous for pedestrians, and he considered that it would not be long before the road was moved alongside the tramline. The motion was carried, the Mayor and Crs. Denham, Harris, and Cooper voting against it.
