BANKS PENINSULA R.C.

SATURDAY'S RACING. CUP TO THORNDALE. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club was rewarded with fine autumnal weather for its Meeting at Motukarara oil Saturday, and an unusually large assemblage of racegoers enjoyed an interesting afternoon's programme. The course and grounds were in fine order, and the motor-car enclosure presented an inspiring spectacle during the luncheon interval. The management of the proceedings left no cause for- complaint, and there was very little delay in closing the totalisator and dispatching the various events. The president, Mr \V. F. Parkinson, spared no effort to see that everything moved smoothly, aud lie was ably assisted in the day's duties by an energetic committee, and by the secretary (Mr J. Wallace), the judge (Mr 11. C. Grahame), and the starter (Mr P. D. MeNab). In spite of a small field, the contest for the Peninsula Cup was brimful of interest, and the enthusiasm of those present was aroused when three of the contestants were in line a short distance from the post. The popular and consistent Thorndale recorded a meritorious victory, and although the chances of Satrap were more favourably considered by investors, the success was well received, aud liorse and rider were afforded a reception on returning to the enclosure. After the race, the silver cup attached to the stake, and given by the president, was handed over to the owners of the winner, Messrs J. G. Maedonald and I!. B. Wood, who were both present, by the patron of the club, the Hon. Sir !J. Heaton Ehodes, who, in a few appropriate remarks, eulogised the splendid record established by Thorndale during the past few months. Speculation was maintained throughout the afternoon, the sum of £11,575 being handled by the machine, as against £9895 10s for the same Meeting last year, representing an increase of £IG7D 10s. Following are. the results of the racing:—

Court Jester was the only withdrawal from the Motukarara Handicap, and in a fairly even-betting race Scoff was installed a slightly better favourite than Great Star and Synonym. Weather , Raid fared badly at the start, from which Amor was the first to ehow out from Scoff and Great Star, and as the home turn was reached Amor still held command from Great Star, Sea Gay, i Synonym, and Scoff. Scoff made a forward move as heads were turned for home, and soon had the measure of Amor and Great Star, going on to win in comfortable fashion by a neck. Great Star weakened in the final stages, and King's Jester, finishing strongly, deprived him of third money on the post, three lengths from the second

horso. Rigmarole was nest, followed by Synonym, Sea Gay, The Viscount, Corsetiere, and Weather Raid.

The winner was never really asked to do his best at any part of the race. He was steadied at the home turn, and followed the loaders into the straight. When called for an effort he rushed to the front and always had the result in hand. Amor again failed to stay on after having every chance from the rise of the barrier. King's Jester showed encouraging form, and finished the best of the remainder. Great- Star appeared to have every prospect in the run home, but did not run up to his recent winning performance. An Effortless Win. With the withdrawals of Luminant and Greyfinch only three starters paraded for the Terawera High-Weight Hack Handicap, and Lancer carried over two-thirds of the small machine total. He took charge after the trio had covered a furlong, and although Xo Response made an effort from the top of the straight, it. was short-lived, and Lancer won without much trouble by a length and a half. Salamat was twenty lengths away. The First Trot. June Nordica, Bushlighi. Lady Baron ia, Pageant, Florrie Pointer, Tannhauser, and Routine were the defections from the Wairewa Handicap Trot, Peter Daunt being made a good favourite from Rose Marie and Dice. After the field had massed the stand the first time Prince Audo took charge and led along the back aud past the far turn from Peter Dauut, Lady Brent, and Master Don. Prince Audo was first into the straight from Peter Daunt, Lady Brent, and Master Don, and the finish was left to this quartet. Prince Audo broke inside the distance, and the favourite took charge. He was challenged by Lady Brent in the run to the post, but, maintaining his advantage, won by half a length. Lady Brent was a.length in front of Prince Audo, and Master Don next. The second favourite, Rose Marie, was placed in behind the leading bunch throughout and finished well back. The Cup Contest. Satrap and Thorndale accounted for the greater part of the investments in the Peninsula Cup Handicap, the former finishing up a slightly better favourite. The field got away on good terms, and passing the stand Magna Charta took charge from Satrap, with Phillipic, Thorndale, Ophir, and Carnot next. Entering the back stretch Magna Charta had a two lengths' advantage from Phillipic and Satrap together, in front of Thorndale and Ophir. Rounding the home turn Magna Charta was still in charge and was first into the straight from Satrap and Thorndale. The leader was being hard ridden at the distance post, and Thorndale aud Satrap drew level with him commencing the final run to the post. Thorndale finished on the best of the trio and, in spite of the determined efforts of the favourite, gained a meritorious victory by half a length. Magna Charta was two lengths away third, clear of Carnot and Phillipic. Ophir was pulled up at the homo turn, and it transpired that he sustained a broken fetlock, necessitating his destruction. Shalimar In Form.

Scoff and Solfello were the only defections from the Ahuriri Hack Handicap, for which Shalimar was slightly better supported than the bracketed pair, Crossbow and Fair Exchange.

Amor was the first to break the line, ]

but after going a furlong Greyfinch took charge and led round tho far turn from Star Stranger, Shalimar, Amor, and Court Jester. Shalimar joined Greylinch at the turn for home, and the pair led Honeycomb, Court Jester, and Amor into the straight. The finish was fought out between this pair. Shalimar prevailing in a fairly comfortable manner by half a length. Honeycomb, who did not have a favourable passage, was two lengths away in third position, with Court Jester, Amor, Fair Exchange, Crossbow, and Motor Smash following in that order, Don Jose Surprises. Margaret Birnev and Projector declined their engagements iu the Kinloch Welter Handicap, leaving four runners, of whom Moorland was made a strong favourite. After Some Abbey and Economist had made the pace to the home turn Moratorium and T>on Jose improved their positions, and had the leaders collared at the distance. Don Jose then rushed to tho front and ran home an easy winner by two lengths from Moratorium, who was a length in front of Moorland. Economist was next, well clear or Some Abbey. The winner was up with the two leaders over the first furlong, butreceived- u set-back and was badly placed at the far turn. Tie made up his ground turning for home, and, once headed for the post, he never left the issue in doubt. Favourite Fails. Singlespear was made an odds-on favourite for the Forsyth Flying Handicap, from which Magna Charta and Moorland were withdrawn. Heisler was the first to show out, but after two furlongs had been covered Singlespear took charge and had a clear advantage from Heisler, with Finora and Spode next, at the straight entrance. Heisler retired at the distance, and Finora and Spode tackled the leader, who was done with a hundred yards from the post. Finora, outstaying Spode, beat her by a length. Singlespear was a neck away third, with Heisler beaten off. A Runaway Victory. The day's programme concluded with the Waihora Park Handicap Trot, Joan Dillon being very heavily supported, but she broke early in the race, and, although in fourth place at the finish, she was a long way from the winner. After the field had traversed a round the fifth choice, Matagouri, -rushed to the front and quickly opened up a big gap from Florrie Pointer, Danny Boy, and Joan Dillon. He increased his advantage as the race progressed, and eventually won easing up by ten lengths from Florrie Pointer, who was twice that distance in front of Danny Boy, who beat Joan Dillon in the run home for third money. Master Don and Routine were the nest to finish.

suspended for twelve months. He appealed against the sentence, and was allowed to ride and drive during the remainder of the afternoon. Rita HcKinney was a few pounds better backed than Mountain Queen /or the Trial Handicap, the pair carrying nearly half the investments, Nelbar and Sunbell being the best fancied of the others. Harold Lee led out from Nelbar, Sunb.ell, and Coy Bells, and at tho end of half a mile Harold Lee and Coy Bells were running in close order, with Nelbar and Mountain Queen next. Hounding the far turn, Mountain Queen, Coy Bells. Harold Lee, and Sunbell were together well clear of the others. Coy Bells led Mountain Queen and Sunbell into the straight, but Sunbell finished strongly, and beat Coy Bells by a neck, with Mountain Queen half 3 length off third. Nelbar was next. In the Murihiku Handicap, for unhoppled trotters, Roan Wilkes was sent out slightly better backed than Kyra. Domo. and Jade. Kyra lo&r his chance by breaking badly just after the start, and Jessie McKinncy at once streaked out to the front. At the end of three furlongs was over twenty lengths clear of Roan Wilkes, Dummy Bingen. ana Watering. Jade ran up into second place parsing the five furlong post, and caught Jessie MvKianey three furlongs from homo. and won by five lengths from Alpha Wiike.«. who finished very fast, and beat Jessie McKinnoy f«»r isccond snoncy by six lengths. Ko:in Wilkes was next. The Trotting Ciub Handicap saw Liberal sent out nearly twice as well backed as Lady Freeman, who was just a little better fancied than Springnote, Revolt, and Dillon Gold. Kree Lance and Lady Freeman tangled at the start, and Mias Adonis at once went out in front, and at the end of three furlongs v.*a? several lengths clear of Lenamhor. with Slump, Liberal. Revolt. and Dillon Goid following. This order was un(■hanged until entering the last where Dillon Gold began to move up. With five furlongs to go Miss Adonis was a length in front of Lenamhor. the pair being four lengths in front of Dillon Gold, with Liberal and vSlump lying handy. Lenamhor was almost on terms with Mi.ss Adonis at the home turn, with Liberal .inly a couple of lengths away. In the run t<> the post Miss Adonis, who was some distance out from the rails, appeared to bore out. but Dwyer quickly straightened her up. and driving her right our, beat Lenamhor by half a length. Liberal's driver changed his line a hundred yards from tho post, and tried to get through on the rail*, but failed to reach Lenamhor by a Ir-ngth. Revolt was next. A protest was lodged against the v.-inner by the driver of Lenamhor for interference in the straight, but was not upheld. In the Coldstream Handicap the public went for Sea Hawk and Play wave, with Alva Lass and White Sun the only others backed. Playwavp and Eiffel Tower played up at the start. Passing the stand Alva Lass just in front of Quo Vadis, Chiming King, and Lady Zita, the last-named breaking badly. Quo Vadis headed Alva Lass, the pair being just clear of f'himing King and the favourite. Going along the back White moved up. and three furlongs from home just headed Alva Lass and Quo A adis, with Sea Hawk close up. Alva Lass and Sea 4 Hawk turned into the straight first, and in a splendid finish White Sun gained a short verdict. Haerc Ita was five lengths away third, and Sea Hawk next. For the Jellicoc Handicap Needles was made a slightly better favourite than Azalaeas, this pair beiug much better backed than Shady Spot or Cardinal and Blue. Emulight and Shady Spot mixed at the start, and Needles led out from Perfect Pointer and vasiuki. Going into the back stretch latter ran to the front, and passing the five furlongs post was eight lengths clear ot' Needles, Cardinal and Blue, Perfect Pointer, and Azaleas. The last-uamed and Cardinal and Blue ran past Vasiliki approaching the home turn, and Azaleas was in charge at the distance, where one of his knee boots dropped, and Cardinal and Blue beat him by a length and a i half. Vasiliki was nearly twenty lengths away third, and the favourite next. For the Visitors 1 Handicap Sunstorm was a much better favourite than Maybird or lied. Abbey, with Luath, John Dee, and Boolburn Lad also fancied. The last-named at once went to the front, and at the end of half a mile was a dozen lengths clear ot Luath and the favourite. Going past the mile post John' Dee nearly fell. Poolburn Lad remained in front until three furlongs from home, where both Luath and Sunstorm passed him. Luath led into the straight and stayed on to beat the favourite by two lengths. Princess Thorpe was ten lengths off third, just. in front of John Dee. Deceitful, who was making his first appearance at the Meeting, was sent out nearly an l even-money chance for the Waiknvi Han' dicap, being more than twice as well bacxea as Arctotis,* Gardenella, Lucky Voyage, or Secret Link. The favourite, who was led into the barrier, broke , very early. Bon Ileur began the best of the limit horses, and showed the way to Exotic over the first half mile. Then Secret Link ran into second place, and commencing the last mile Gardenella and Exotic were lying next to Bon Fleur and Secret Link. Bon Fleur continued along the back, always well clear of Secret Link, ana three furlongs from home Arctotis ran up to them.i Bon Fleur led Arctotis into the straight, but in the .run home tho latter beat Bon Fleur by nearly a length. Secret Link ivas eight lengths away third, followed the Au Revoir Handicap Spring Chimes was sent out about £6O better backed than General Pointer or Lou Thorpe. Marinca beean the best of the limit horseß, and Lou Thorpe of the back-markers. _ After going a furlong this pair were out in front, witlt Scottish Maid and Spring Ohimes handy. Near the five furlong post Lou Thorpe skipped, and Scottish Maid followed Marinca round the far turn and into the straight fro? 1 .-'- 1011 Thorpe, Sunstorm, and El Garon, Marinca stayed on to win by two lengths from EI Caron, who beat Sunstorm by a head, with Lou Thorpe a similar distance off fourth. AUSTRALIAN RACING. ■ V.R.C. AUTUMN MEETING. . (bj cable—press association—copyright.) ; (AUSTRALIAN AND N.Z. CABLZ ASSOCIATION.) (Received March 4th, 5.5 p.m.) MELBOURNE, March i. , There was dull, threatening weather for tho races, but a large attendance, including a few New Zealanders. The going was good. The State Governor was present. Fiscus was always'well placed, and won the Pines Hurdle Race nicely. He cost his owner, Mr J. E. Brewer, 500gns. Trivalve led all the way in the St. Leger Stakes, .and was not extended. The first prize amounted to £lll7. Trivalve has now won over £25,000 in stakes. - He ran the last mile and n half in 2.34. Amounis was fourth early in the Essendon Stakes,- but took charge in the straight and won brilliantly. He was ridden by the exNew Zealander, H. Cairns. Gothic finished with a remarkable run in the Newmarket Handicap, and won narrowly. This was his second successive victory in the race, and he received a great ovation. He costs 1650gns in England, and is trained by a former New Zealander, Lou Robertson. His rider, J. Pike, stated that Gothic missed the jump out, and waß interefered with twice. Mollison led always in the Sires' Produce Stakes. This was his fourth- win in as many starts. He cost TOOgns as a foal. His owner, Mr E. M. Pearce, won the race in 3924 with Arendal. Mollison's dam, .Molly's Robe, won the Newmarket Handicap. The imported Medmenham was eighth early in tho Brunswick Stakes, but finished fast and won in the last stride. He scored at Caulfleld last week. The stewards enquired into the cause of interference with Gothic, Avant Courier, and Biskr3 in the Newmarket Handicap, and decided the trouble was caused by Numenia steering an erratic course. Gothic and Biskra collided a short distance from, the post. A. Reed, rider of Sans Culotte, stated the mare tired badly. Jones, rider of Chrystal, stated he had a good run. and thought early' in the race he would win. The sectional times were: St. Leger Stakes, last four furlongs 51J. last six furlongs 1.15J; Sires' Produce Stakes, first three furlongs 38$, last four 48$.
