CANTERBURY CHAMPIONSHIPS. 'VARSITY WINS EASILY. There was only & moderate attendance on Saturday aiternoon at English Park, when the Canterbury amateur athletic championships began, but in the evening there was an attendance of several thousands. In the Ei'tcinoon and evening the programme was ru:i to schedule timea. and the officials are to- be congratulated. 0. Standen and D. Grav (Australia) made their appearance, and the latter was particularly successful. Standen was racing under a handicap as a result of iv fall whon having a' training race with J. I '. Grose Jast week, and Gray was also bandaged as a result of his injuries. Each lias a great burst of speed, and the match races between them excited keen interest. A percentage of the gate is to go to Grose, who was unlucky enough to break a thigh. The following are the results:
