OBITUARY.

MR HERBERT BROWN. By the death of Mr Herbert Browit, nf Mount Thomas, North Canterbury loses one of its best known residents. The Mount Thomas run was taken up by the late Mr John Brown about 185<, and has remained the- property of the family ever since. The late Mr Herbert Brown lived almost all his li' e there. He had not been in good health lor the past month or two, and his death came rather suddenly on Friday. In his youth he was a line athlete. being at one time captain ot Christ's College football team and a holder of the School Challenge cup. After leaving school he travelled m England and South Africa, but subsequently married a daughter of the late Mr T. S. Mannering, of Fernside, and settled down at Mount Thomas. Mr Brown was respected by all who knew him. Being bynature of a retiring disposition he did not take much part in- public affairs, but he devoted much time to the welfare of St. Matthew's Church, Fernside, of which he was a warden for over 30 years. He is survived by his widow and two daughters, Miss Doris Brown, and Mrs Fitzgerald Hamilton.

MR CHARLES SPEIGHT. [THE PRESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, February 19. The death occurred suddenly yesterday of Mr Charles Speight, manager of the Dunedin Branch of Ne'v Zealand Breweries, Ltd., and a director of the company. Mr Speight was one of Dunedin's best-laiown citizens, being born here in 1865 and spending his whole life in the city. His parents, Mr and Mrs James Speight, arrived in Dunedin in 1861, and in 1876 his father founded the brewer's business with which Mr Charles Speight had been associated since 1881.

The late Mr Speight was educated at the Normal School, and although never actively associated with local politics he took a keen and helpful interest in many branches of sport and various business and other organisations. Prior to the big brewery merger some years ago, Mr Speight was manager of the firm of Speight and Co., and since then bad been Dunedin manager and a, director of New Zealand Breweries, Ltd. He was the holder of a number of local directorships and a director of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition Co., being honoured with the 0.8. E. in recognition of his work for that undertaking. , '

MR R. C. CARR. (pans ASSOCIATION TILIQRAM.) AUCKLAND, February 19. The death has occurred of Mr R. C Carr, a late director of the New Zealand Insurance Co., and a well-known old colonist.
