CIVIC AFFAIR? The. monthly meeting of the Temuka Borough Council was held on Wednes : day evening. President: His Worship the Mayor (Mr T. E. Gunnion), Crs. A. H. Fenn, E. B. Cooper, E. H. Taylor, L. Robins, G. H. Clements, J. Cook, and J. B. Sinclair.

The Mayor moved that a letter of condolence bje' sent to the family of the late Mrs G. Hobbs, who has passed away since last meeting. The motion was carried, members standing in silence.

The Mayor stated that the tar-seal-ing on the boundary of the borough by .the British Pavements, Ltd., was nearing completion, and the work was a boon .to the borough. The Mayor called the Council's attention to the resolution on the Council's books regarding the Winchester scheme. If the Orari scheme was to be gone on with, the resolution had better be rescinded. On the suggestion of Cr. Cooper, it was agreed to allow the Winchester scheme proposal to stand on the books until the Government granted the lease of the Orari reserve for the high-pressure water supply. On the motion of Crs. Fenn and Cooper, the clerk was instructed to write to the Loans Board relative to raising a loan to carry out the necessary work in connexion with the water supply. The Medical Officer of Health wrote regarding the unsatisfactory state of the area used for the disposal of night soil. It was agreed to invite the Health Officer to meet the Council at some suitable date with the contractor at the area complained of. The chairman of the Main Highways Board invited members of the Council to meet thein on January 30th, as they passed through Temuka on their way to Timaru. It was agreed that Councillors should meet the members of the Board at the time stated. The secretary of the Temuka Fire Brigade forwarded a complaint regarding the fire plugs. It was agreed to attend to the plugs.

It was agreed to pay for the fire extinguishers recently purchased by the Fire Brigade, and to inform the Brigade that in future applications must be made to the Council for permission to make purchases.

Mr C. G. M. Boyce (Ashburton), wrote stating that when motoring through Temuka over the newly tarsealed road, his tyre and tube had been punctured, and claimed the cost of damage, viz., 12s 6d. It was decided to write stating that the Council accepted no responsibility, a notice having been posted over the road saying that the ronrl was closed. T?ie poini'd-keeper reported impounding three horses and one cow during the month of December. The pay-sheet of the District Fund Account, amounting to £896 3s Gd, was passed for payment. The credit balances of the several accounts are as follows: — No. S loan interest account £23 6s sd, general account £BS 12s 2d, sanitation £IIS 4s 6d, drainage maintenance £l2B 19s 2d, drainage extension £7l 17s 9d, water works maintenance £lB2 7s Id, total £6}o 6s lid. The Mayor reported that the Balclutha Boys' Band would be in Temuka on Tuesday, January 24th. Saturday, March 3rd. It was stated that the number of visitors would include. 400 children and 200 adults.

The chairman of the Arowhenua Cemetery trustees reported that he had visited the cemetery and the caretaker had pegged out the new plots. It was intended to provide a plan of these newplots. The credit, balance of the Cemetery Board amounts to £l7 12s sd.

It was resolved, pursuant to Section 16 of the Shops and Offices Act, 1922, that the statutory half-holiday be observed on Thursday.

Pergonal Yesterday afternoon Mr and Mrs G. B. Cartwright, Mr and Mrs Tarbotton, and Mrs and Mrs Shand, returned to Temuka after a motoring tour to the West Coast. During the trip they visited Kaikoura, Blenheim, Picton, Nelson, Westport, Greymouth, Hokitika, and the Franz Josef glacier. They left Westport on Tuesday, returning via Otira, and reached Christchurch the same evening, and came on to Temuka yesterday. ■ • '

Native Land Court. A sitting of the Native Land Court was held in the Temuka Courthouse yesterday to consider the Government proposal to purchase the Native reserve "Punaomaru," south of the Waitaki. The area of the reserve is 455 acres more or less. The minimum price is £4, and the maximum £B. The procee'dings are presided over by Mr A. M. Booth, of the Native Land Department. The sitting is likely to be prolonged owing to the difficulty of getting an agreement among those interested. There are about 300 interested persons.

Magistrate's Court. At Temuka yesterday morning, before Mr W. F. Evans, J.P., a statutory first offender was convicted of drunkenness and discharged.
