NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The monthly meeting of the Rangiora High School Board of- Governors was held on Tuesday evening, Mr C-. L Jennings presiding. There were also present Messrs W. A. Banks, H. K. Kippenberger, J. Stevtenson, C. W. Bell, R. Ball, W. A. Rowse, and the Rev. C. Blair. ' The resignation of the matron of the boys' hostel, Mis P. Luisetti, was accepted, and the chairman was instructed to write expressing the Board's appreciation of her services. The chairman stated that an application had been received > rom Mrs A. G. Bell for the position of matron of the boys' hostel, and after a, consultation with the rector, he Had appointed her to the position. It was decided to endorse the action or tn© chairman in appointing Mrs Bell as matron of the boys' hostel. The chairman stated that it would be necessary to purchase certain furniture for tha hostel, and after a discussion it was decided to leave the " matter m the hands of the hostel committee, as also was the question of a better water service for the' boys' hostel. It was decided to acknowledge the receipt of a cheque for £lO from the Eyre County Council, Mrs Gvileteley, Loburn wrote stating that a number of children in the Loburn district had obtained their proficiency certificates, and asking ir some provision could be made for their conveyance to the High School, The chairman stated that in company with. Mr Strachan and Mr W. A Banks they had met a number of parents at Loburn, and discussed the matter. He had written to the Minister for Education on the position. The treasurer's statement showed receipts since last meeting to have been £lO6 6s. and expenditure £llß 10s Id. The bank overdraft was £59 6s Bd.

Mr Albert Johnston, of Whangarei, and son of Police-Sergeant Johnston, late of Rangiora. and Mrs Johnston, were visitors to Rangiora on Tuesday. Mrs J. Stevens and her voune son, who have been the guests of Mrs C. R. Thwaites at the Wnodend Reach, are returning to Carterton on Saturdav.

MASON'S FLAT. A meeting of residents of the Mason's Flat district was held in the school on Monday. Mr A. Cowie was voted to the chair. Mr Cowie stated that the object of the meeting was io consider the advisability of ail effort to secure for the district, the Mason's 1" lat School, which was now vacant, due to the advent of the Consolidated School in Ha warden. The school was quite a landmark in the district and it is understood to be one of the first fccliools to be erected north of the W«ka rass. l'he matter was discussed at length and it was decided to form a committee to make further enquiries. Ihe committee was elected as follows: —Messrs F. D. Dalzell (chairman), S. nti Secretary), A. C'owic. F. Pohl \\. T. Earl, H. T. Little. W. white, A. H. Dalzell, F. Pilcher. C. E. Mason, E. Mason, E. W. Johnson, w. L Wright, and E. C. Whits. CHEVIOT. The Cheviot Amateur Sports Club has been very unfortunate in the matter of the weather for their annual sports this season. Wet weather necessitated a postponement from December 17th to Saturday last, and after a spell of beautiful weather, and when the prospects looked very bright for a successful meeting, a change in the weather occurred on Friday evening and Saturday morning broke with rain falling and with every appearance of it continuing for the day, and the committee very reluctantly decided again to postpone the sports to a date to he selected later. Although the sports were , postponed, the Scottish Society s Pipe Band and a number of dancers visited the district and played selections in Mackenzie and on the Sjwrts Ground. During the day the weather cleared and the racing track dried sufficiently to enable one or two impromptu events to be held, several competitors who had intended competing at the sports taking part in the events. The dance, which had been arranged as a wind up to the sports, was held and proved very successful, there being an exceptionally large attendance and a thoroughly enjoyable evening was spent. During the evening exhibitions of Scottish dancing were given by members of the Scottish Society s party, which were greatly appreciated by those present, the dancers being rewarded with hearty applause. Music for dancing was supplied bv Mr A. Hunnibell, and extras were contributed by members of the pipe an " Messrs L. Withers arid J M. Glasson. On Sunday morning the visitors were conveyed to Gore Bay and returned to Christchul'ch in the afternoon.

ASHLEY BANK. Mr John Lilley, one of Ashley's oldest and most highly respected residents, died on Saturday, aged 83 years. The deceased came to New Zealand in 1864, in the ship Tiptree, landnig at LytteJton. After residing in Riccarton ter about two years, he took up land in the Ashlev district, where he Ined until the death of his thre« yeai a ago, a few months after the celebration of their diamond wedding. LEITHFIELI). A meeting of the Leithfield Beach Improvement Committee was held in the hall on Monday evening, there being present: Messrs W. A. Kelcher (chairman), J. Fitzpatrick, D. ,W. Palmer, T. H. James, Jas. Ashworth (jun.), D. McLean," F. Pcnfold, and Mrs C. H. Trail.: Accounts amounting to £4 17s 6d were passed for. payment. In connexion with the children s beach amusement zone, it was decided to place on record an appreciation ot the fine work done by Messrs J. Russell, H. May, A. v\. AKelcher',- Jas. A friendly cricket match was. played in the Kirwee recently between teams representing Swannanoa and Kirwee, the result being a win for the . local team by two wickets and eieht runs. SOUTHBRIDGE. At a special meeting of the Southbridge- Football Club, held on Monday evening, Mr L. Maw was elected to succeed Mr F. A. iS track as secretary, and Mr H. G. Hubbard was elected a trustee. In order to help the funds, it was recommended to the social committee to organise a series of &v-e socials, to commence nest xVpril. It was agreed to keep in view the arranging of a match against some other club at Easter.

A meeting of swimmers, convened by the Town Board, was held at Southbridge on Monday evening, when it was resolved to form a club to take control of the swimming bath. Mr RJ, Parkin, who presided, said that the Board would not permit the bath to be used unless some responsible body took control of it. The members of the Fire Board recently set up to arrange for the ploughing oF fire-breaks across the plains in the vicinity of Oakleigh estate and some miles above, towards

the Main South road, made an inspection of the work carried out. They decided' to have the ploughed land harrowed and rolled, so as to avoid the risk of accidents to traffic, Tos iJaukside, the farmers, working in- conjunction '■ with the.- Railway Department, had earned out a considerable amount of ploughing, while the Selwyij Plantations Boatd had also done a great deal along the same lines. It was found that there was a network of fire-breaks up to and beyond Heslerton estate, a far greater amount of protective' work hanng been done than at any time in the past. Messrs G. E. Benny, and W. S. Worner' undertook to canvass/the-farmers within the fire area for subscriptions towards the cost of the.work. The Ellesmere-County Council has .agreed to grant £ls, the North. Rakaia River Board will contribute the same sum, .and it is expected ■that the landowners will require to find about £ls.

LADBROOKS. A party was given recently at their residence, Ladbrooks, by Mr and Mrs Mark Gallagher, who entertained, a number of friends in honour of the first birthday of their little daughter, Millicent. The host and hostess spared no pains in assisting the time to pass pleasantly aud enjoyably, and music and games were greatly appreciated bv both juvenile and adult guests. Songs were contributed- by -Menzie Foster, •Evelyn Edgar, and Mrs Prendergast, recitations by Betty Solomon and Jack Prendergast, and a dance by Menzie Foster. Later the birthday tea was served in the dining-room, where the table was artistically decorated with pale pink poppies and bells. The fortunate little girl was the recipient of many beautiful birthday gifts. Towards : the close of the evening, Mr A. Clarke expressed the thanks of the guests to Mr and Mrs Gallagher for their hospitality, and wished their small daughter all manner of good fortune. Mr Gallagher briefly replied, and "Aulcl Lang Syne" was sung before the company dispersed. Mrs S. Edgar with her children (Lyttelton ) has been staying with Mrs Mark Gallagher, Ladbrooks.
