AUCTIONS. H. MATSOM AND CO. HMATSON and CO. REPORT ON • ADDINGTON MARKET FOLLOWS: — STORE SHEEP. The market opened with store lambs, of ■which we estimate the entry round about tfOOO to 8000. In the opening sales the best class sold irregularly at about last week's prices, with an easing tendency, other sorts could only be quitted at a lower price, especially uneven woolled ones, or sheep with bidi-bidi or travelled sheep, or Bheep of ■unequal quality of wool, but as the sale proceeded the buying fraternity seemed to gain confidence and prices became consistent and in many cases showed a hardening tendency. reviewing the market as a whole, we are of the opinion that prices generally may be considered Is easier than the previous week, Ihe better class of lamb showing the least irregularity. We believe that the whole of Iho entry was disposed of, and in looking: back on the sale to-day we really think it was a wonderful sale. The average price under the different headings throughout the sale may be roughly estimated as follows: West Coast lambs, not including Down Cross, averaged 21s 6d, selling from 18s 5d to *J3s 4d. Sappy crossbreds, A and B finalities, averaged 22s 3d, selling from 10s Id to 245. Down Cross lambs averaged 22s Bd, selling from 22s to 24s 6d. Peninsula Jambs averaged 21s Bd, selling from 17s Gd to 22s lid. Corriedales averaged 20s 6d, selling from 16s Id to 25s 2d. Culls averaged 10s, celling from 15s tu IGs l'jd. .Several lots had to be dipped, and we would strongly recommend vendors to see that their lambs are dipped before they come forward to the market. Consignments look sorry dipped in the market. ADULT SHEEP—There were not many wethers in the market, but what there were were not very attractive, and they sold from the best of last week's prices to a shade easier, one attractive line of wethers making up to 24s lOd. Numerous pens of ewes of certain and uncertain ages were on offer, many of the consignments not being attractive owing to foot rot # or travel lameness. Last week's prices in our opinion, in this particular section, were not maintained. There are numerous expreMons of opinion as to what the ewe market is going to be, and a section seem anxious to boost the price of ewes. H. Matson and Co. have always been in the habit of assessing the value of a breeding ewe on the price of a couple of lambs. This is generally a pretty faithful gauge. . PAT LAMBS. H. MATSON and CO. report that the total yarding was 3250, and their representative considers that tlie entry was not quite as attractive as Iho previous week. As usual, there were several lines of attractive exhibits, aud in many cases those particular consignments realised prices well over schedule rates. Competition was keen at the best of last week's rates, perhaps a shade weaker for light or unfinished lambs. A large portion of to-day's entry was acquired by the local tradesman for City requirements. XI. MATSON and CO. quote as follows: — Best heavy lambs 32s Cd to 34s_10d, prime 28s to 325, medium 25s 6d to 27s 6d, unfinished 28s to 255. H. MATSON and CO. report the following principal sales: —On account of Mr M. (Beal (Eyreton), lambs to 33s 4d; Messrs C. and G. Gardiner (Clyde road), lambs to 32s 9d; Master L. In the fat eheep market thoro was not a ■very big entry. Sales opened at a shade lower than last week and throughout com-X-ctition may bo considered irregular. There wao a largo proportion of ewes of all. qualities and generally the basis for the greater ■bulk of the offering in thiß section was on a line with schedule rates. The big heavy ewes although the factories did not buy these, were hard to quit as the butchers bought tiem at lower rates. Handy clean ewes of nice light-weights and good handy wethers but light-weights which the City tradesmen are now anxious to get in face of their clients' demands, eoli throughout the sale at last week's rates. In view of the fact that the public will have smaller jointß and lean meat—if they cannot get it they will buy white meat such as poultry ond fish.—many of the exhibits of over-fatted consignments that are always on view at Addington, are having to take a back seat in the prices realised. Taking the sale of a ■ -whole, we think that the prices for heavy ewes and also for heavy wethers were easier than last week, but they must be ■ considered good. Handy-weight mutton of all grades sold at last week's equivalency. Inferior ewe mutton and unfinished wether mutton were subjective to prices on the same basis as the store sheep market. H. Matson and Co. quote:—Wethers: Extra wethera to 35s 4d, prime 30s to 32s 6d, medium 27s to 29s 6d, others to 245. Ewes: ■Extra ewes to 34s Id, prime owes 24s to 27s 6d, medium 19s to 235, others as low &s 14s 6d. _ H. MATSON and CO.'S PRINCIPAL SALES ATTF. MATSON and CO. ADDINGTON. CALVES. H. MATSON and CO. REPORT the entry in this section comprised 221, of which H. Matson and Co.'s catalogue was 112. There was an excellent sale. This bears out the fact that we maintain to-day the butchers are buying smaller carcassed mutton. They are buying light lambs. They are buying lighter beef, and the public generally are consuming a larger quantity of veal and poultry and fish. The quality to-day generally was good, and the demand was sound for all classes. H. MATSON and CO. quote:—Small calves 25s to 325,' medium 32s 6d to 40s, average 425.6 d to 50s; best 52s 6d to 655, medium runners £3 10s to £4 ss, good £4 10s to £5 ss, best up to £B. PAT PIGS. H. MATSON and CO. REPORTThere ■was a large yarding of porkers, of which a fair number were on the light side, although there were & good majority of well-finished sorts, and considering the quantity forward the market remained firm to the concluding stages, and practically all lots were sold at auction, showing a slight improvement on last week's rates. There was a fair entry of baconers, the bulk of the yarding being well finished sorts, and nearer the weights required by the buyers, which found a more ready sale. Prices throughout' must be considered better than last week, there being njorj competition throughout. Values were:—Light porkers 30s to 355, medium S6s to 42s 6d. heavy 43s to 49s 6d, overage 5Jd to 7d; choppers 30s to £4 8s 6d, large £2 5a to £2 12s 6d. heavy £2 15s to £B, average 3}d to sd.
