MUSIC TEACHERS.

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. The fifth annual conference of the New Zealand . Society of Professional Teachers of Music will be held in the Training ■ College, Christchurcli, ou January 25th and 20th. Tlie delegates will be .welcomed by the president of the Canterbury Society, Mr A. J. Merton.

The Music Teachers' Registration Bill -will be discussed, also various remits, including the following:— "That this conference take steps to draw the attention of musical societies to the disparity existing • between the fees paid by such .societies to soloists and those paid to their regular conductors; it being known that the amount annually expended "on the engagement of soloists usually far exceeds that paid to conductors, whose duties demand at least equal skill and are far more exacting and continuous, without whom the societies could not exist at all, and to whom they are indebted for much valuable musical tuition." (Wellington Society.) "That an endeavour be made to have a clause inserted in the Registration Bill empowering local societies to form a provident fund to assist members who may require help." (Otago Society.) The following papers will be read: Dr. V. E. Galway: "The Place of Music in Education." Mr E. Douglas Tayler:. "Music and the New Ago.'' Mr J. Holmes Runnicles: "Music and its Value to the Community." t Miss A. J. Church: "Musical Appreciation in "Schools." Mr Robert Parker: "Music in Canterbury Fifty Years Ago.'.' The Canterbury Society will entertain the delegates at an "At Home" on the evening of January 25th, and on the afternoon of January 26th the visitors will be taken on a motor trip round the City.
