CHILD KILLED.
NEW YEAR'S EVE TRAGEDY.
RUN OVER BY MOTOR-CAR. Eariy on Saturday evening, Yvonne Lawson. a liule girl of rive years and 10 mouths of age. tne daughter of Mr and Mrs T. Lawson. of 38 Tonks' stiw. North New Brighton, died from injuries received as a result of being vim over by a posing motor-car, driven by Mr C. S. Hardy, a member of tho staff of the Agricultural Department. Immediately after the accident the child was taken to the hospital, but died later in the evening. It appears that Mr Hardy was pulling up his car opposite tho fruit shop owned by Mr .1. E. Bobby, in Bowhill road, and the child was playing with other children. She apparently ran out from behind another car coining from the direction of the beach." The little girl passed in front of Mr Hardy's car, hesitated, turned round to go bacK, and ran into the near wheel. When the car stopped she was underneath it. Mr and Mrs s>. Eyre,, who were near by, pulled the child out, and Mr Hardy called Dr. Glasgow, of Now Brighton, who could not find any injuries. He thought no bones' had been broken. The child was then taken to the hospital, where she was examined by Dr. Church, and an operation was performed. She died at 11.30 p.m. Mr A. Lang, who was in the car with Mr Hardy, did not see the child turn back, and did nob know there had been an accident until he heard the screams An inquest) was opened before the Coroner, Mr H. A Young, S.M., nt tho hospital yesterday morning, evidence being given by the mother that the child had good sight and hearing, and very good health. The enquiry was adjourned until January 16th at the Court.
