AtSt. Mary's Church, Hokitika, this morning the marriage was solemnised of Miss Eileen Malonev, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Malonev, of Woodstock, and Mr Gordon Haussmann, fifth son of Mrs Peake and the late Mr G. Haussmanri, of Hokitika. The ceremony was performed bv ,the Rev. Father O'Doherty, of Boss! The bride, who -was given away bv her father,, was smartly gowned in a" frock of bois de rose repp, beautifully embroidered, with hat to match. She was attended by Miss Phyllis Haussmann, who wore a pretty frock of apple green brocaded crepe de chine, relieved with champagne and a hat to match. Mr and Mrs Haussmann left later for Christchurch.

Messrs H. Nahr and E. Methven (Westport) left this morning for Wellington, to attend a conference of the licensing trade.

The dea-th occurred at the Westport Old People's Home yesterday, of Mr Samuel Chapman, a native of England, and eighty-four years of age. Deceased arrived in New Zealand sixty-three years ago, and in the early days of the Coast followed mining pursuits. He also conducted the Inangahua Junction Hotel for some years. He is survived by three sons and three daughters. The Weather. West Coasters are beginning to wonwhether the innovation of daylight saving has angered the weather gods. Dark brooding clouds continue to shut off much of the extra light which was promised by Mr Sidey's Bill. The conditions to-day were reminiscent of midwinter. The James Mine. The employees of the James Mine have had more than a fair share of compulsory holidays during the current year as a result of inadequate shipping facilities and a slackened demand for the mine's product. The mine was idle again to-day, the reason given being a shortage of shipping at Greymouth. The miners will have another day off to-morrow, but hope to resume work, on Friday.

Slip at Eewanui. A small slip took place this morning at the foot of the hoist tunnel at Eowanui. A speedy clearance of the debris was effected, and the working of the mine was not interrupted. The Deer Pest. With reference to a resolution passed by the Inangahua branch of the New Zealand Farmers' Union in connexion with the destruction of deer, the Commissioner of Crown Lands has advised. Mr H. E. Holland, M.P., that an item for the purpose mentioned appears on the Estimates for the State Forest Service for this year. Referring to the suggestion that poisoning of deer be reverted to, the Government appreciate that deer are becoming a serious pest in some districts, and the whole question is at present receiving close consideration with the object of bringing about, by poisoned salt licks or other means, a greater decrease in the number of deer.

Raids at Keefton. Acting upon warrants issued at Greyniouth, Senior-Sergeant C. E. Roach, accompanied by Constables Houston (Eeefton), and Conway (Waiuta) yesterday raided Burke's Hotel, in Broadway, Eeefton, which is conducted by Arthur Ernest Oilman, and seized- a quantity of documents which will probably result in Gilman being charged with keeping a common gaming-house. The premises of Jack Barnett, tobacconist and hairdresser, also in Broadway, Eeefton, were raided by Constables Hill (Eeefton) and Gurden (Ahaura). A search resulted in the seizure of a number of documents, and a prosecution will probably follow on a gaming-house charge. Two men were found on the premises at the time, of the raid. Maruia Road. The work of constructing a bridge over Cliff creek, on the Maruia road, 'was put in hand this morning.
