BEACH PATROLS.
PERMANENT MEN NEEDED.
SURF CLUBS REQUIRE ASSISTANCE.
The need for permanent beach yatrcU at the principal bathing places was emphasised at. the annual meeting of the Canterbury Surf and Life-Saving Association last evening.
The New Brighton Club wrote suggesting that the Chris-tchurch City Council should be approached rcgai - ing the matter of permanent beam patrols being provided for the beaches around Chris'tehurch. ilr H. Throp said that with the advent ot the Summer Time measure his club felt that- the club* should be < r iv«*n sonic.asiisiancc in pati'Oiling tinLeaches daily, it was hardly fair to expect the members to come down cverv afternoon to patrol the beaches. The'sum of £2o for (Sumner and New Brighton was already on the Council estimates, but this was inadequate. He considered the time had arrived when a definite bathing area should bo marked on each beach, so that it could be properly controlled. If tho Christchurch City Council were approached it. could do the ground work more effectively than if the dubs approached the local governing bodies in their districts. Mr S. K. Bassett spoke in favour of the Council being approached. The Sumner Club members were willing to patrol the lieaeh gratis on holidays, but could not undertake it every day. Mr C. Atkinson endorsed the principle of the suggestion, but he thought each Surf Club sliould approach its own local authority and obtain their assistance in approaching the City Council. A great number of "bathers did not reside in the districts, but the safer the beaches were made the more popular would tbev liecome. Mr Atkinson moved that the Sumner and New Brighton Councils and North Beach Burgesses' Association be approached asking them to appoint delegates to meet the Association to discuss the project of organising a combined deputation to the City Council,
The motion was, after discussion, amended to exclude tho North Beach Burgesses' Association and include the RovaJ Life-Saving Society. The motion was carried, the chairman and secretary and Mr McDowell being appointed the Association's delegates.
