FIRE BRIGADES.

CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION SOCIAL.

The annual social of the Canterbury Provincial Fire Brigades' Association was. held on Saturday evening at the Christchurch Fire Brigade Station. Superintendent AV. Tyler, of the Raugiora Brigade presided, representatives being present from the . "Waimate, Geraldine, Ashburton, Terauka, Lyttelton, Suniuer, .New Brighton, Kaiapoi, Rangiora. Southbrook, Aldington, Railway, Christchurch Railway, and Central Fire Brigades. An apology for absence was received

from Superintendent Cooper, secretary of the Southern Districts Association, and from' Tyler.

Mr W. Hunterj- Palmerston North, proposed the toast of the United Fire Brigades' Association, Superintendent C. C. "Warner replying. Superintendent Warner said that the only fault to be found with the United Fire Brigades' Association was that there was not sufficient unanimity. It was regrettable that the Government had withdrawn its subsidy to the association.

Captain T. J. Watt, of Auckland, advisory superintendent of the association, advised the members of the Canterbury Association to co-operate, and to see that the right candidates were put forward for election to the Dominion executive. He referred to future demonstration programmes, stating that distinct changes had been made. More motor and ambulance work was

to be included in compulsory drill, and squad drills would be issued shortly. The new programme would be an effective reply to the Government's charges that the competitive brigade events were not up-to-date. Mr Andrew Banbery proposed the toast of the Canterbury Fire Brigades' Association, with which he had been identified ever since its formation.

The chairman, in reply, said that such dissension as had existed in tho Canterbury Association was now ended, and the executive had in view several schemes to be put into operation during the year, including a torchlight procession in Christchurch. Mr 3* Carter, a past-president, also replied. Superintendent W. Carson. Lvttelton, proposed the toast of the Christchurch City Brigade, Superintendent Warner replying, and the toast of the artists was proposed by Mr H. S. Willetts. Mr J. Lockhart replying. The birthdays of Deputy-Superinten-dent Blake, and of Mrs Watts were honoured.
