SMUGGLED CHINESE.
SHIP'S MASTER HEAVILY FINED. (BT CABLI!— PRieSS ASSOCIATION—COrtTRIGHT.) (AUSTRALIAN AND NZ. CABLE ASSOCIATION.) PFIRTH, November 5. Captain van Keuleti, of the steamer Almkerk, was fined £SOOO on a charge of being the master of a vessel on which over 50 Chinese Stowaways were found.
This is stated to be the highest fine ever imposed in West Australia. [Customs officers found 54 Chinese in a small ballast tank deep down in the bowels of the ship. Some were in a death-like coma. The lid of the tank had been closed on the arrival of the vessel in port, and cargo was stacked over it. There was a foot of water in the bottom of the tank.]
