CUP DAY AT RICCARTON.

"Cup Day' - —these are magic words to Canterbury residents; indeed, of all days in the calendar, none is more pleasnrably anticipated by the general public. And seldom has this great day dawned more pleasantly than it did on Saturday, when in warm sunshine an expectant crowd, including an unusuallv large number of visitors, thronged the lawns at Riccarton, where the racing was most exciting, an d_just as important from a woman's point of view—the frocking was smart, interesting, and varied. The gardens, too, added their quota to + he general air of gaiety and brightness. About them there was a colourful luxuriance that yet did not outrun trimness. Lilac in full bloom, laburnum with its drooping cups of gold, and the rare crimson kowhai nodded above, beds of marigolds, wallflowers, and petunias. , The dressing, on the whole, was subdued in colouring, black with and without touches of white or of bright colours being very popular Then the whole rango of mastic shades from palest biscuit colour te deepest bracken brown, were greatly favoured, wliile naw blue, so kind to young and. old alike, made a triumphal re-entry into the foreground of Fashion. Green, too, claimed not a few devotees, and manv attractive frocks of patterned crepe de chine added variety to the

scene. . ~ , Hats were large and practically devoid of trimming, except for plain encircling ribbons. The two striking characteristics were the appearance ot plain crowns, boasting not a wrinkle or a fold, and brims almost as wide at the back as at the front and sides.
