Effigies of the notorious Guy Fawkes were burned in Christchurch on Saturday evening with the accompanying volleys of fireworks, but the old custom has waned of late years, and there were no special celebrations. Small boys paraded the streets in eccentric garb, extracting their toll from successful punters.
