■ ♦_ ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. " Mr J. P.Hanratty, supervisor of mails at the Ashburton'Post Office, left for Christchurch on annual leave on Satur-. day. The Rev. D. C'alder, Dominion Secretary for the British and Foreign Bible. Society, conducted the morning service at St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church vesterday and preached at the Methodist Church during the evening. Adjutant -A. Ransom, of the Salvattion Army, is-at present on furlough. Adjutant Gibson and Mrs Gibson, of the Chinese Mission, who have been on a visit to AshDurton/conducted the services at theSalvationArmy yesterday.

Magistrate's Court. At the Magistrate's Court on Satuidav morning, before Mr R. a first offender was charged with being found drunk and acting in a disorderly manner in a public place. Accused pleaded guilty to both charges. Senior-Sergeant Martin said that accused had been badly knocked about in the war, and he thought that had something to do with his position. Defendant was convicted and discharged on the first count, and fined 10s and costs 2s on the second charge.

(Croquet. There was a good.attendance oil the Ashburton Croquet Club's lawns on Saturday afternoon, when the nrst senior and junior doubles progressive tournament *ere played. Mr J.'J Oakley won the senior with a score of 4o and Mrs Meikleham won the junior with a score of 43. Summer Tune. The first noticeable effect with regard to the summer time, which came into operation at 2 a.m. yesterday, was the alteration in the time of commencement of several of the church services. All denominations, with the, exception of the Presbyterian, held their evening service at 7 instead of 6.30, and in the case of St. Andrew's, the services will commence at 7 p.m. as from next Sunday. The advantage that the introduction of the law will be to sports bodies was evident yesterday by. the seemingly long evening.

Visit to Oamaru. The Ashburton Salvation Army Band, accompanied by. officers of the local corps, including Adjutant. Ransom, will pay its annual visit to Oamaru during the next week-end, leaving on Saturday afternoon and returning on Sunday night. • _ . _ Orange Lodge Dance.
