COUNTY COUNCILS.

KAIKOURA. The monthly meeting: of the Ifaikoura County Council took place on November 4th. Tresent: Crs. James Boyd (chairman), C. ranncll, G. Eaton, G. .. Farsons, P. Curran, and J. A. Johnston.

The Awatere County Council wrote agreeing to co-operate with Kaikoura in its advocacy of declaring the Wharanui-Parnossus road a Government road, and in urging the member for the district to bring the matter bcmre Parliament.

It was decided that the price asked for by -Messrs Aitken and Arthur (£25), for half-an-acre of land to provide for n deviation when constructing: a bridge over Humhug Creek, was excessive, and the 61d road line would be adhered to.

A circular letter was received from the Prime Minister regarding the observances on Armistice Day.

The wharfinger reported as follows for the month of October:—lnward cargo: Gene'-al ■M.> tons, timber 2.50 super feet, 1 bull Outward: General 9MJ tons, timber 57 743 super feet wool and skins 47 bales 'and bundles. lhe Highways Board advised that au Order-in-Council revoked an old order regarding portion of the main highwav, and declared in lieu thereof another portion of the road leading through the business portion of the township. Authority was given the chairman and clcnc to take the necessary action regarding a loan of i'l7oo for repayment of the Council s cost of constructing the Hapuku bridge approaches, the term to be ten vears The Council decided it could not "accede to the Kaikoura Tennis Club's request to replace the gates leading to the courts. Jt was resolved that the forma! protest against the closing of certain roads in Hun<lalce survey district by the Public Works Department.

It . was resolved to advertise, notifying campers that they must apply to the Countv Council for camping sites on the beaches of Kaikoura, and that a fee of 5s be made for use of such camping sites. The electrical engineer reported that the income on operation account for October was £ll3 lCs 2d, and the expenditure £ll7 9s 2d.

It was agreed that the electrical engineer proceed to Wellington in reference to the electric light regulations.

The Kaikoura Racing Chi') was granted thu use of the South Bay Domain for its annual meeting on December 2Bth.

The Public Works Department advises that a five-span bridge would be required over Middle Creek, and the engineer was requested to secure more definite information. W. Chapman'« tender, £94 iSs, was accepted for laying down a croquet lawn at Takahanga Domain; h. Guthrie's tender, £32, was accepted for top-dressing the cycle track; and P. M. Kerr's tender, £l2 ss, for removing and reinstating the entrance gates to the Domain.

The engineer reported that arrangements were being made regarding the opening up of the road to the lighthouse. An application to lease the pound reserve for business premises was deferred.

It was resolved that the Council protest against the tax of 4d per gallon on petrol. It was decided to draw the notice of the stock inspector to the growth of gorse ou the roads and private property. 'Riding expenditure for the month was as follows:—Peninsula £sl Its Jd. Suburban £72 Bs, Clarence XL's, Conwav £9 Bs, Hundalee £1 lGs.

ASHLEY. The Ashley County Council mot at Loburn on Thursday. Present: Crs D. R. Hutchison (in the chair), Bennett, JSnsor, Fitzgibbon, McCracken, nnd Pulley. A vote of sympathy was passed to (he county chairman, Mr I. P. O'Halloran, in his -illness. Cr. McCracken was asked to see to the preparation of the Kami's road reserve for planting, and to take charge generally of the Council's plantation work. The chairman reported that the fencing of the approaches at the Karetu bridge was now complete, and in members' opinion it was a solid and satisfactory piece of work. The chairman also reported that the bridge portion of the Wasbpbol bridge and approaches contract had now been let at the satisfactory figure of £4OB. The clerk was instructed to ascertain whether the cartage, by a contractor, of sand or gravel over the Ashley traffic bridge would be held to bo extraordinary traffic, and in such case to estimate the damage. The Loburn Tennis Club wrote stating that a. court, under the control of the Domain Board, was now under construction, and asking the Council for a grant. It was decided to give £7 in completion of tho Work. In reply to the Progros League's request for a contribution, members gave the League credit, for useful work, and advanced £5 over last year's grant,
