RAPIER WINS.

The racing throughout was of outstanding interest. Six favourites prevailed during the day, and this fact materially assisted to swell the totalizator investments. The spacious stands and grounds presented a fine spectacle as tho 14 candidates lined up for tho Cup. The raco was interesting from barrier rise to the winning post, llapier secured a. promising position behind .the leaders jyter half a milo had been covered, and his rider kept him there until four furlongs from home, when he challenged the then pacemaker,- . Beuannee. "With a fine display of judgment, Emerson sent his mount to the front at the distance post, and the favourite's name was at once proclaimed. He had a clear advantage opposite the main stand, but at this stage .his supporters received a mild shock When he was seen to stumble and lose a little ground. Ho was soon straightened up again, and Emerson found it advisable to give him a couple of strokes with the whip in the last 50 yards. He responded in a bull-dog manner, and was leaving his pursuers in the concluding few strides. Rapier's performance stamped him as a game galloper, and justified the high opinions formed of him during the past two beacons. Apart from winning last reason's Wellington Cup, a set of circumstances prevented him from showing his real value in high class company until this event, but now he can bo classed with the best handicap performers produced in New Zealand. He was ridden a masterly race by .the southern premier horseman, C. Emerson, who, incidentally, registered his first victory in the race. His trainer, H. Nurse, of Riccarton, who also led in bis first winner of the Cup deserved ©very credit for his painstaking efforts in giving tho horse a thorough preparation, and he received many congratulations. Rapier was bred by his owner,, Mr G. G. Holmes, who has not. been in good health for some time, but was able to view the race from the motor enclosure. After the race the gold cup attached to the stake was handed by Mrs G. Gould to Sir R. Beaton Rhodes, who received it on behalf of the victor's owner. Mr G. Gould, chairman of the Committee, in a few appropriate remarks, eulogised the splendid performance registered by, a good, horse, who in addition to being owned by a liberal supporter of racing, was also bred by him, a fact that made the victory more interesting to Mr Holmes. Mr Gould made special reference to the rider, C. Emerion, whose unblemished career extending over 20 years, was a credit to his profession. Hearty cheers were given for horse, owner, trainer, and rider.

Th« »uccess of Sir George Clifford's brilliant filly, Childsplay,' in the two-year-old classio event, was one of the popular features of the day's racing. The public mado her the staunchest favourite of the gathering, and she continued her unbeaten record by outclassing the remainder of the field and winning in time which could have been bettered if she had been more seriously troubled in the run home. Childsplay's future efforts will be awaited with interest. She will not be again raced until the Auckland Summer Meeting, when she will conWit the Great Northern Foal Stakes, and Roya) Stakes. The Stewards' Handicap produced a •trong field, both from a class and numerical point of view, and an indication of the wide range of betting may be gauged from the fact that the ultimate favourite, Eulalie, returned a remunerative dividend. As anticipated, her speed over the early part of the journey disorganised the majority of the field, and the advantage 6he *»» thus able to establish entering the course proper, made her safe in the final run to the post. The Absurd filly is possessed of marked galloping ability, and her inclusion in the Oaks field on Wednesday will inTest that classic with more interest. The fine weather, high class fields, and the unusual success attained by favourites all tended towards extensive speculation, and the large sum of £65,609 was handled by the totalisator.. representing an increase of £8123 10s on the figures recorded on the corresponding day 12 months ago. The totals for the eight races read as follows: Spring Hurdles, £5052; Spring Plate, £6933: Linwood Handicap, £7084; New Zealand Cup, £12,927; Welcome Stakes, £6986 10s; Apprentices' Handicap, £6786 10s: Stewards' Handicap, £ll,lß-5; Riccnrton Handicap, £8505.

The programme was carried out with even' disnatch, and the time table rigidly adhered to ; The grounds and course were in excellent order, and everything tended towards the success and enjoyment of the dav's racing. Cup Day at Riccarton.

CHILDSPLAY'S WELCOME STAKES. Stewards' Handicap to Eulalie. The Canterbury Jockey Club were favoured with ideal weather for the opening of their Metropolitan Meeting at Riccarton on Saturday, and probably the largest gathering of the public seen on the course for some years assembled from all parts of New Zealand. Chief interest centred in the contest for the New Zealand Cup, the field comprising a formidable representation of the Dominion's best handicap performers. The finish aroused the utmost excitement, and the victory of the public's choice, Rapier, was loudly cheered. The horse and rider met with an enthusiastic reception from the thronged enclosures, and cheering continued until the weighing-in process was completed.

The Welcome Stakes proved an easy victory for Sir G. Clifford's unbeaten filly Childsplay, who has now undoubtedly established herself as the speediest two-year-old in action this season.

The long-established Stewards' Handicap provided a difficult problem for investors, but the numerous followers of the favourite, Eulalie, had very little cause for anxiety when the post was within reach.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

Hurdles to Beauty Liglit. The opening event, the Spring Hurdle Handicap, attracted seven starters, Santiago being the only withdrawal. On his recent form on the flat, Aberfeldy was mado tho public choice, but he jumped very big at every fenco, and tailed the field throughout. Bachelor Gay was the early leader, and piloted Kaikahu, Dubious, Tarleton, Beauty Light, Koauau, and Aberfeldy in that order past the stand. The leader mado a mighty jump opposite the stand, and still held his lead going along the back but he shirked the next fence and ran off the course, interfering with Kaikahu in doing so. Tho latter was then left in command, but Beauty Light joined him approaching the turn for home, and -uimpcd the last fence with a slight advantage. In the run homo Beauty Light went on to win in attractive style by two lengths from 'Kaikahu, who was six lengths in front of Koauau. Dubious was a similar distance away fourth, and then with a gap came Aberfeldy, who beat Tarleton in the run homo.

The winner was bought only a few days prior to the Meeting by the Whigatui owner-trainer E". Shaw, who handles a number of horses, and invariably does not have to wait long for a return. Bachelor Gay had a good break on the field when he ran off, but Kaikahu appeared to have his measure at the time. Kaikahu lost ground when stopped by Bachelor Gay, and this probably cost him the race. Aberfeldy was a big "disappointment, while Tarleton, although jumping well, never look* ed likely to be in the money.

Consistent Duke Abboy. The scratching pen was freely used in the Spring Plate, Gaybird, Hoylake, Happy Queen, Limosa, Oratrix, Coupling, Panther, Eotor, Star God, Wayward, Wreath of Myrtle, Bourse, Insolence, Miss Mercia, and Vigilance comprising withdrawals. Duke Abboy attracted most attention on the machine, and duly prevailed in an easy manner. The field got away to a good Btart, but Wild Pigeon's rider was dislodged as the barrier rose, and she took no part in the race. Latin Quarter and Sarchee were the early leaders, and they piloted- Teri, Ladykiller, and Shalimar past the far turn, and to the home bond. Ladykiller, Latin Quarter, and Teri entered the straight close together, but. when heads were turned for the-post, Duke Abbey came through from tho middle of the field, and had the race won inside the distance. He was challenged by Teri and Singleton in the run hbrne, but was not troubled to cross the lino with a two lengths' advantage from the Derby candidate Teri, who was a length in front of the Gisborneowned Singleton. Talisker was a good fourth just in front of Satrap, Sudden Storm, Latin Quarter, and Sarchee, the last to finish being Ladykiller and Shalimar.

Duke Abbey has proved a great bargain for his owner, who purchased him during the Wellington Autumn Meeting, and has won three good races with him since. Sudden Storm and Satrap were interfered with in the mis up after the barrier rise, otherwise they would have participated in the finish, a3 both were close up to the placed horses at the post.

A Popular Win. All the twenty-one acceptors paraded for the Linwood Handicap and in a good betting pool, Fee Simple, a stable mate of Duke Abbey, and Wanderlust, was considered the best proposition' but he failed to gain a place. A good start was'effected, the first to break the line being Amor, Spode, and Vigil- ! ance. At the far turn, Amor was slightly in front of Vigilance. Spode. Sky Quest, Bronstell, Pee Simple, Eotor, and Paper Boy. Amor was the first to euter the straight from a bunched field, but insido the distance Paper Boy came from the back, and registered a meritorious victory by a length and a half from Rotor, who was a head in front of Broustell. Fee Simple finished strongly in fourth place, a head away from Rotor. Heads separated Vigilance, and Hoylake, and then came Moratorium, Tembroney, and Spode. Money Peer's saddle slipped after the dispatch and he finished a lung way back last. Paper Boy ran two promising races at the Wellington Meeting, and has done good track work since. There is not much of him, but he is a solid galloper and may do further good service for the stable, which has not experienced much fortune this season.

Rapier's Cup. The large and representative field of fourteen faced the starter for the New Zealand Oup and the* candidates

attracted much attention as they paraded in the birdcage, and executed the preliminary As soon as business was commenced, it was seen that Rapier would be favourite, and he wound up with close on eight hundred tickets more than were carried bv Piuthair, who was four hundred in advance of Star Stranger. Lady Desmond gave trouble at the barrier, but a good dispatch was eventually made. As the field entered the course proper, the order was Royal Game, Bennanee, Footfall, Lady Desmond, To Monanui, Star Stranger, Piuthair, Battlement, Pink Note, with Yoma last. Royal Game had a slight advantage from Bennanee going out of the straight, with Footfall, Battlement, Te Monanui, Rapier, Piuthair, Star Stranger, and Count Cavour following. Yoma and Equerry being last at this stage- The order underwent little change at the mile post, except that. Strang' , and Te Monanui had improved their positions. Royal Game surrendered the lead at the far turn, and Bennanee took charge from Rapier, Battlement, Footfall, Yaward, Star Stranger, and Te Monanui. Bennanee was the first .to enter the straight from the favourite, but once turned for home, the latter assumed the lead, and at the distance post was in command from Bennanee, Battlement, Footfall, Star Stranger, and Te Monanui. Rapier increased his advantago in the final run to the post, and although his rider found it advisable to draw the whip when threatened by Star Stranger, he won amidst the greatest excitement by two lengths. Footfall finished determinedly, but Star Stranger held him off to gain second money by a head. Bennanee was deprived of second position only in tho last hundred yards, finishing a length and a half away in fourth place, with Te Monanui, Pink Note, Battlement, and Yoma close up. Then came a gap with Count Cavour at the head of Piuthair, Vaward, Royal< Game, and Lady Desmond, Equerry being the last to cross the line.

Unbeaten Ohildsplay. The field for the Welcome Stakes was materially reduced by the defections of Full Feather, Noteworthy, Staghunter, Banket, Flicker, Kentish Lady, and Pure Gold. Of the remainder, Ohildsplay's number was entrusted with well over half the total invested on the machine, the only other two at all woll supported being Tea Miss and Goblin Market. The youngsters gave no trouble at the barrier and all were sent off in line. After a furlong had been covered, Ohildsplay established a lead from Silver Rule, Silver Paper, and Goblin Market, and this was the order at the false rail. In tho run home, Ohildsplay showed remarkable speed, and never <*ave anything else a chance, winning without effort by three lengths. Silver Paper stuck to his task well to gain second money, two lengths in front of Silver Rule, with Tea Miss, who finished well over the concluding stagos, a length away. Goblin Market, who stopped badly in the straight, was next, clear of Royal Duke, Bridget, Red Jazz, and Royal Flower.

An Exciting Finish, Money Peer was the only withdrawal from the Apprentices' Handicap, for which Wanderlust, who won over a mile in Wellington, was a thousand tickets better favourite than Master Clarence.. From another good start, Don Jose, who drew No. 2 at the barrier, was the first to show in front, and led Wanderlust and Starflight, to the far turn, the remainder of the field being well bunched. Don Jose was first into the straight from Starflight, Wanderlust, and Avro, and one of tho best finishes of the Meeting ensued. Starilight appeared likely to gain the verdict nearing the post, but Wanderlust finished better, andsnatched victory by a short head. Avro was a head away in third position, with Arikiwai fourth two lengths away, in front of Thurnbell, Grand National, and Gaybird, the remainder being well strung out.

Brilliant Eulalie. Eoremoana and Booster were the only defections from the Stewards' Handicap, Eulalio carrying over a thousand tickets more than Comic Song and close on the same number in advance of Crown Area. The field got away on good terms, the first to show in front being Money Order, Eulalie, who drew an outside position, Lady Cavendish, and Gascony. i When the course proper was entered, Eulalie gained the rails, and established a break on Crown Area, and Kiosk. The finish was left to these three. Eulalio had a two lengths' advantage opposite the stand, but Crown Area and Kiosk reduced the gap as the post was i within reach. Eulalie responded well to a final eall from her rider, and gained the verdict by half a length from Crown Area, who beat Kiosk by a neck for second honours. Lausanne finished strongly from a long way back, two lengths away, and then followed Comic Song, Paperchase, Benzora, Shirley, and Civility. Eulalie's victory was full of merit, as she was a long way out at the dispatch, but with her speed she was soon able ito get a good position. The pace she set had the majority of the field in trouble from the start, and she never appeared in danger of defeat. Crown Area, another inmate of New's stable, which at present is having a remarkable run of success, did.well to gain second money, but he had no chance with tho winner. In previous races he has been slow ta move off, but has always finished well. In this event, however, he was one of the first to find his feet, but his usual concluding effort was not in evidence. Kiosk was always in the picture, and snould be seen to advantage in later engagements. Valicare's brother, Lausanne, surprised the natives by finishing like the proverbial train, being close up to *the third horse at the post. Comic Song had every chance, but was troubled, like the majority of the field, by the winner's pace over the first furlong. He was prominent inside the distance, and his name was proclaimed, but his effort was only short lived. Gascony was the disappointment of the party, as after showing out shortly after the start, he faded out of the picture, and was well back at the post.

A Derby Trial. The concluding event, the Eiccarton Handicap, was another good betting race, the Derby candidate, Laughing Prince, Paleta, and Ark Eoyal being the best supported. The first named was a less than even money favourite, carrying no less than £3IOB, as compared with £1268 on Paleta, and £llßs on Ark Eoyal. Joybird was tho first to show out in front from Palota, Vcsperus, Laughing Prince, Ophir, Ark Eoyal, and "vertigem, Margaret Birney being badly left. Joybird was the first into the straight from Paleta, Vcsperus, Laughing Prince, and Nincompoop but when t~o serious stretch was entered upon'the favourite asserted himself, and evading all challenges, won decisively by a length and a half from Nincompoop, who ran a solid race throughout. Eowley was galloping better than anything at the finish, and was within a head of Nincompoop, with Vesperus a like distance away fourth :n front of Joybird, Assurance, Ophir, and Tiega Laughing Prince recorded an easy victory, and was hot seriously threatened once he assumed control.
