CRICKET.

FIRST GRADE MATCHES.

THIRD ROUND BEGINS. With one exception the batting sides on Saturday made the best use of the ideal conditions that prevailed—perfect weather and splendid wickets." Considering it -was New Zealand Cup day there was an exceptionally good attendance at Hagley Park, where the chief attraction was the game between Riccarton and High School Old Boys, these two teams being generally considered the strongest in the competition. Riccarton soon demonstrated that their small score in the previous round was not their, true form, and they put up the good .total' of 347 for seven West Christchurch put up a good score against St. Albans, but they will be without Newman next Saturday, and the Saints should have a good chance against the very ordinary bowling of the Westerners. Sydenham are in a good position against Old Collegians, but their batting was very slow. Linwood are in a br.d position against East, and as they will be without Read next Saturday, East should have an easy win.

Riccarton v. High School 0.8. Riccarton, who . batted .first, made light of the attack from .'the very .start, Gorrie hitting up his run's in quick time. Roberts was Boon disposed of, but then' Haines and Cox set up a great partnership which lasted an hour and three-quarters, and took the total to 170 for the third wicket. Haines continued to give a fine exhibition of stylish batting, and he was well past his century, with the total 270 for seven, before he was disposed of. Todd and Rix then played out time, the total standing at 347 for seven -wickets, at which figure Riccarton declared. Scores:—

St. Albans v. West Christchurch. After West Christchurch bad Host a wicket early, Newman and Blank got well set, and put on 111 before' Blank,, was bowled. Newman's batting was watched, with great interest, and stood the test, well, the general opinion being that, he has a very correct style with. good strokes' a'll round the wicket. He did not stay, long after Blank had gone, but Hayes followed up his fine score of the previous match with another good knock, and he passed both Blank's and Newman's total before-he fras disposed of.
