I GREAT FIRE IN DUNEDIN. BL\G, HARRIS AND CO.'B PREMISES DAMAGED. IXSIVE DESTRUCTION AVERTED. . Considerable damage to the bulk contents of Messrs Bing, Harris and Co.'s stores in Vogel street was done last evening when fire swept the lower portion of the brick building, destroying a motor-car and threatening an adjoining produce mart. , The City Fire Brigade was called out at 10.15 p.m., and made an excellent save, confining the blaze mainly to the front portion of*the building. . At the outset the firemen found progress barred by a heavy double sliding door, behind! which the fire-was rapidly assuming the intensity of a furnace,' while the door itself was beginning to burn. After some difficulty a passage was forced and two leads were run into the interior. The second motor was taken to the rear of the building where two more leads attacked • the flames from the rear and protected the more inflammable contents piled near the rear entrance. Last evening Mr G. Benson, manager of Messrs Bing, Harris and Co., stated that the greater portion of the goods stored in the building were not reached by the fire, and would have suffered mainly smoke and water damage. The bales comprised mats, carpets, and other soft goods lines. He was unable to give an estimate of the damage, but the insurance on the contents of the building were in the neighbourhood of £4OOO or £SOOO. At the subsequent sale of the salvage Mr A. E. Armstrong, on behalf of T. Armstrong and ,Co., Christchurch, purchased the majority of the slightlv damaged stock, and! they will be holding a Fire Salvage Sale at their two huge emporiums in a few days. Christchurch peopje can look forward to a veritable bargain list of goods seldom seen in this city. Watch daily papers for the openin; day of this Great Sale.
