NORTH CANTERBURY.

RANGIORA. The new Summer Time Act, which came into force yesterday, did not seem to worry the general public very much. The earlier hour at which the church services were, held did not interfere to anv extent with the attendances, and does not seem to have caused any inconvenience to the general public. The annual dance of the Girls' Hockey Club was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening. There was a very large attendance. Breache's Orchestra supplied the music, and extras were played) by Messrs G. Mehrtens, C. Hunnibell, and E. McEwan. The dance was one of the most enjoyable held this season.

The quarterly rally of the North Canterbury Me'thodist Sunday Schools' Union was held in the Methodist Church on Saturday afternoon. Mr W. A. Baskin presided, and there were over 100 visitors present. The visitors were welcomed hy the Rev. C. Blair, and Messrs A. Hames and F. Thompson replying. The Rev. W. B. Cuming gave the address for the afternoon, the subject being "Thinking Big Things." On the roll being called, 100 teachers answered to their names. At the close of the meeting the visitors were entertained to tea by the teachers of the Rangiora Sunday School and friends.

At the Rangiora Police Court on Saturday morning a first offender pleaded guilty to a charge of drunkenness. Ho was convicted and fined ss. Mr W. A. Rowse, J.P., was on the Bench.

Last Sunday fortnight the anniversary services of the Rangiora Methodist Sunday School were held, but the day was very wet and a number of children and parents were unable to attend On a request being made it was decided to repeat the service yesterday. Unfortunately the morning was again wet and a number of the children were unable to be present. However, the hymns were and a very appropriate sermon was preached to the children by the Rev. C. Blair.

Taking advantage of a free day, a \'ery_ large number of members of the bowling club turned up on the green on Saturday afternoon and engaged in friendly games. A rink championship game was also played, in which J. Wood defeated J. C. Bamfield after a good game by 28 points to 21.

KAIKOURA. At a banquet to mark the 50th anniversary of the Presbyterian Church in Kaikoura, the Rev. J. G. S. Dunn presided over a large and enthusiastic gathering. The guests of honour were the Rev. W. McAra (the first minister of the charge), and Mrs McAra, and other visitors included the Rev. W. W. Bedwell (Anglican), Rev. W. O. Robb (who has recently retired from St. Andrew's, Blenheim), the Rev. J. A. Reilly (Seddon), the County Chairman. (Mr James Boyd), and members of the Anglican vestry and churchwardens. The hall was beautifully decorated. A lengthy toast list was honoured. Mr S. J. Mogridge contributed violin solos, and Miss Elder gave a humorous sketch entitled, "At The Registry Office," The banquet was brought to a close by a final message from the Rev. Mr McAra, after which those present sang the Doxology, and the Rev. Mr McAra pronounced the Benediction.

Complaint was made at the County Council meeting on Thursday against acts of vandalism and destruction of native birds and bush scenery hy visitors to the district. The fact that the County Council is not the controlling authority of the scenic reserves is one reason why such acts pass-by without prosecution. AVinston Monk, son of Mr and Mrs F. Monk, of Kaikoura, was the winner of the Colonial Institute's essay on "Trace the British Empire in the Malayas." He is a pupil of St Andrew's College, Christchurch, and is 15 \ years of age. Last year he was the winner of the essay on "It is on the Navy that the welfare, safety, and strength of the Empire chiefly depends." Both essays were ' favourably commented upon. A social evening organised by the ladies of St. James's congregation was held on "Wednesday night, and was largely attended, the function proving most successful. Items were given hy Misses Palmer, Pope, Marquet and Hancox, and Messrs W. Tombs, W. Perrin, and Hancox. A number of competitions were also enjoyed. After supper the Rev. W. "\V. Bedwell, on behalf of . the promoters, thanked those present .for their attendance, and the performers for their items, .the proceedings closing with the singing of "Auld Lang Syne." Mr T. Harle forwards the following weather report for the month of October, for Hapuka, seven miles from Kaikoura :—The month was fine and dry until the 23rd, when a very severe storm was experienced, with heavy rain and much snow on the hill country. Thence on the weather was broken. A heavy thunder-storm passed over the district on the loth. The total rainfall was 3.D6 inches, compared with 3.35 for October last year. Rain fell on eight days, the heaviest fall being 1.27 inches on " the 23rd. Feed is plentiful, and the district looks well. Mr W. W. "Weavers, of Lyndon Downs, reports 3.1 D inches of rain on seven days, for October, the heaviest; fall being on October 24th. when 1.18 inches fell.

The Rev. John Bissett. of Glasgow, Assembly Evangelist, arrives in Kaikoura on Saturday to conduct a spiritual mission at St. Paul's Church. Mr S. E. Rutherford, of Central Otago, has taken over the New Club Hotel.

Mrs McSwigan. a very old and respected member of the community, has disposed of her business, and intends leaving Kaikoura next month.

CHORLTON-LITTLE AKALOA. A public meeting was held in the library. Little Akaloa. for the purpose of electing a committee to look after the library. Mr Herriot was voted to the chair. After some discussion as to what should be done the following were elected a committee:—Messrs Herriot and Brittou. Mesdames Mcintosh. E. Waghorn, and Miss Linda "Waghorn. Mr Herriot was elected chairman and Mrs Mcintosh librarian. The winning players at the last euchre party were Miss Craw and Mr A. Craw, with consolation packets of sweets to Mrs E. Waghorn and Mr V. Craw.

SPRINGSTON. On Thursday evening, a euchre tournament and dance in aid of the bran tub at the gymkana was held in the public hall. There was a good attendance, and after a very enjoyable evening's play, the following wen- announced as winners:—Ladies, "Mrs W. Greenslade 1. Mrs H. Sail 2; men. Mr R. Wall 1. Mr A. McKay 2. After supper had been served, a dance was held, music being supplied by Mr RAVall and Mrs W. Greenslade. A Monte Carlo waltz was'held, this being won by Miss Vera Wall and Mr Registren, and a Monte Carlo two-step by Mr and Mrs H. Sail. Mr J as. Benny,, juu, was M.O,

BROADFIELD

The fortnightly euchre tournament and dance in aid of the school prize funds was held in the schoolroom on Friday evening. There was a large attendance. The winner.- of the prizes for euchre were:—Ladies, Airs Gile>, >erj.. 1: Miss Somerville. 2. Men, Master A. Giles 1. Mr Harold Lack, jun. (Lincoln) 2. Music for the dance was supplied hy Mr L. Stare, aud extras were played by Mr T. Trask.

SOUTHBROOK. On Saturday evening the Southbridge Cycling Club held the final of ihe'r card socials for this v> inter. There was a large attendance, the prize wiuners being Mrs A. Grimwood, and Mr P. Power. The ladies of the Southbrook Methodist congregation were entertained on Thursday afternoon bv Mrs C. Blair at the Parsonage. King street. Music and competitions filled in the afternoon pleasantly. A dainty afternoon tea was served, and the gathering was much enjoyed by all those presents
