SPORTING.

TURF GOSSIP. Medley has foaled a fine colt foal to Limond, therefore a full brother to the redoubtable Limerick. The filly foal by Limond from Comely died soon after birth. Zaragoza and Windshield have foaled colts to Diacqucnod and Shambles reapectivdy. Limerick is a regular attendant on the tracks at Riccarton. As was to be expected, he looks a little light, but is bright and well. The erstwhile Auckland-trained Stormy has arrived at R D. Jones's establishment at Riccarton. Mr A. P. Wilson, of Palmerston North, has been appointed chairman of the New Zealand Racing Conference Stipendiary Stewards in succession to Mr J. McMahon, who left- for Sydney last week. After the disappointing form shown by Ganymede and Raasay at Trentham on Monday, their owner cancelled the trip to Riccarton. They will not now be raced until the Auckland Summer Meeting. Star Stranger and Joy King will be J. H. Jefferd's representatives at Riccarton. Knightliko and Star God were sent back to Hastings after the Trentham Meeting. The price paid for Teri is stated to be 850 guineas, with a contingency of 950 guineas from either Derby Stakes should he prevail. Rapier's showing in tho Champion Stakes on Monday was disappointing to his trainer, who thought he would at least have finished in the money. The Champion Stakes did not serve to throw much light on New Zealand Oup prospects, but at the same time tli® four candidates engaged would not- lose many friends by their display behind a champion. To Monanui #nd Beacon Light both ran solid races, the latter especially showing promising form. Laughing Prince created a good impression by his finishing effort in tha Champion Plate after being well behind the leaders at the turn. It was in the nature of a useful Derby trial, and the Australian-bred colt will be a formidable proposition in the classic. Blimp is held under partnership by Dr. M. G. Louis Son and Mr R. Nathan, of 'Wellington, but races in the former's name. Monday's success was the second he has recorded since carrying Dr. Louisson's colours. Mr W. R. Eemball has a big string of horses in training, but taking a line on Wellington form the stable will not experience a very successful season. Zippor, the five-year-old brother to Magna Chnrta, resembles the latter in build. His form at Wellington was far from encouraging. Booster showed plenty of grit when contesting the finish of the Nainai Handicap with Shirley at Trentham on Monday. Tho pair were hard ridden from half way down the straight, and there was very little between them at the end. The two races Booster, had will put him into good order for his Stewards' Handicap engagement. j In his remarks at the presentation oeremony at Trentham on Monday, Mr H. A. Knight said he appreciated the outburst of public enthusiasm over Limerick's performance* and felt more pleasure in winning the event than he derived from the gelding's Australian triumphs. ■ Oratrix, who claims Oratress as her dam, is improving with racing, and followed up two secoild plaeings at Otaki by acting as runner-up to Wanderlust in the Tararua Handicap ftt Trentham on Monday. She lost some ground at the turn into the straight through interference, but finished with a burst of speed, and passed all but the winner. Boy, who still remains in the Now Zealand Cup, was made second favourite for the Tararua Hack Handicap r»t Trentham on Monday, but was not sighted oh the voyage. 011 that performance his chance in the two*mile event does not look very hopeful. Miss G. Maher'a stable will'be represented at the Masterton Meeting on Saturday by Grand National, Red Fuschia, and Kalos. The trio will then be brought to Riccarton. Ring Boy ran two promising races at Trentham. He is a three-year-old gelding by Kilboy from Jui Jitsu. He lias not done, much racing, but gives indications of turning out useful. S. Waddell is due at Riccarton today with Shirley, Beacon Light, Flicker, and Bridget. The twcwyear-old Chit will not make the trip to Riccarton. Her absence will allow B. H. Morris to ride Pure' Gold in the Welcome Stakes. P. Davis will arrive at Riccarton on oaturday with • Second W r ind, Pure Gold, Gascony. and Great Charter. The Wahine. badl a large shipment of horses from Wellington last evening; including Don Jose, Silver Coot, Paper Boy, Booster, Mandane, Avro, King Midas, Iblisker, Te Monanui, Miss Mercia, Te Atiawa, Star Stranger, Joy King, Bennanee, Tiega, Teri, and Tea Miss. The Banks Peninsula Racing Club's Spring Meeting, to be held at Motukarara on Saturday, will afford owners their last opportunity to try out their horses prior to tho opening of the Riccarton carnival. With large fields 111 all the races, it is evident that the Meeting makes a strong appeal, and as the competitors will include some of the best horses at Riccarton the publio will have the chance of witnessing sport of a. much higher class than is usual at suburban fixtures. The ploughed track at Riccarton was nob in use for training operations yes. tcrday, the heavy rain which fell earlier in tho week having put it out of action. It has dried up fast, and it will bo all the better for the soaking. A large number of horses put ill an appearance yesterday morning, and though there were no notable gallops, some of them wore given strong pacing or short sprints. There should bo a lot of interesting work on the Riccarton tracks this morning. The horses who are to race at the Banks Peninsula Sleeting 011 Saturday \vill attract, the principal attention, but the near approach of the Canterbury Jockey Club's carnival will give an- iinportanco to all the gallops A new winning post, for five furlong and six furlong races will be in use ab the Canterbury Jockey Club's Meeting next month. It is now in position, opposite the eastern end of tho outBide stand, on the top deck of which accommodation is being fitted up for the jndge and his assistant. The starting barriers have been shifted to their new positions, about sixty yards nearer the stands.

Footfall has been a popular fancy for the New Zealand Cup sine© the appearance of the weights, but he lias gone ooi of favour lately His desertion by many of his former friends may be due to the fact that lie has not had a race since the Asliburton jfeeting last month, and the feeling that he will be at a disadvantage when <jjiposing horses who have had a lot of hard racinjrto help them in their prej.aration. He has been nominated for the Itiocarton Handicap, which will bo run on tho first day of the Canterbury Jockev Club's Meeting; and 1 his is interpreted as evidence that h<J iiwy forfeit his New Zealand Oup engagement. The Autumnus gelding is

to lace in tho Akaroa Handicap at Motukarara 011 Saturday, and the final decision as to hi 3 Riccarton programme may depend on how he shapes in that event. Rapier is back at Riccarton, looking none the wor.se lor his hard race in tho Champion Plate at Trent-ham on Monday. Hid performance among tho weight-for-age cracks was very c-rcdit-ahle, and he has added to his circlo of admirers for the New Zealand Cup. The South Canterbury trainer, H. G. Coker, brought Mimo north for the I'-.uigiora Meeting 011 Monday, but ho settled his chance by failing to .jump out smartly. Mimo is still at Kiccarton, and he will l>o racing at Mot-u----kiii-ara 011 Saturday. Mr 11. A. McKenzie'.s two marcs, P kith air and C'larinda. who wore broapht to Kiccarton by T. Lloyd, after rrriving in Wellington from their Sydney trip, have done well since theic arrival at headquarters. They failed to striko form in Australia, but from their appearance they may soon make amends. J. McCombe's active team is now' confined to tho two-year-old Amorist. Two of his Australian three-year-olds are temporarily laid aside. Despot is suffering from an injury to a shoulder" nnrl Court Jester has been operated on for a growth in his throat. The two Rossendalo fillies have been retired to tho stud, and they will be mated with Shambles. Several North Island trainers are expected to arrive at Riccarton this morning with their teams, and during the next i'ew' days a big contingent of visiting horses may be expected to put in an appearance to assist at the Canterbury jockey Club's Meeting. Among the horses who have engagements in the Okain's Trial Stakes, to be run at Motukarara on Saturday, are Luminant, Donne, Wreath of 'Myrtle, and Beaming, who have won laces lately. Luminant, who was successful at Rangiora, represents the most up-to-date form, and faho may start favourite. Riccarton stables claim four representatives of the New Zealand Cup. Three of them, Count Cavour, Footfall, and Rapier, are engaged in the Akaroa Handicap, the chief event at the Banks Peninsula Racing Club's Meeting on Saturday, and as they aro all definitely hooked as starters, the public will have a special treat at Motukarara. Money Order has not been seen at any of the spring meetings that have been held during the last few weeks, but lie is duo for an appearance among the sprinters at Motukarara 011 Saturday. As he has been discussed,in connexion with the Stewards' Handicap, his form will ho followed with interest.

The weather for the concluding day of tho Gore Racing Club's Spring Meeting was perfect, with bright sunshine and no wind. The lAurse was improving all the afternoon. For an off-day, tho attendance was excellent. Both Pink No to and Contio Song won easily, but the quality of the fields behind them did not make their performances impressive trials lor their engagements at Riccarton. In a fioid, of seven. Atapo wus sent out over XldO better 'baoked than Penury Rose in tho. Wentwood Hurdlo Handicap, with Jack o' Lantern the best backed of the others,: Captain Sarto and Ecuador (bracketed) being the outsiders. Jack o' Lantern led over the initial fence, wliero Cashinan fell. In the long run to the next hurdle Jack o' Lantern drew out three lengths in front of Thistlecrown and Captain Sarto. The lastnamed headed Jack o* Lantern at the hurdle near the. seven-furlong post, whero the latter tried to run off, but Jack o' Lantern wa3 soon in front again, and' led round tho far turn from. Captain Sarto and Thistlecrown. The last-named dropped back to Penury Rose, who was being hard ridden, round the top, and Jack o' Lantern led Captain Sarto, Atapo, and Ecuador into the straight. Jack o' Lantern led over' the last fence, but on the flat Captain Sarto finished best, and won by a length from Ecuador, who finished well, and beat Jack o' Lantern by a short half-length for second money. In tho Gordon Hack Handicap Royal Saxou was sent out nearly a £IOO better favourite than Felony, with Schottische almost as well backed, and King Balboa next in demand. Takaka was first out. and led along tho back from Royal Saxon, King Balboa., Schottische, and Royal Head. Going to the far turn. Royal Saxon (on the rails), Schottische. and Royal Head were On even terms, and they led round the top from Kirn; Balboa. Roynl Dijoted (Schottische, Felony, and King Balboa into the straight. The last-named put in a good run, and caught Royal Saxon inside the distance post. tie. was slightly in front fifty yards from the judge, but Royal Saxon responded well, and got up to dead heat with him. Felony was two lengths away third. Jj'dAbbey and Sea Hawk carried nearlv Mil tbe pool invetted on -the Otama Saddle Trot,-• tlte former being slightly the better' backed. Miss Adonis and Tarndale vcrc

the best supported of t«ie other?. Ko<j Abbey began well, and led Tarndalc und Miss Adonis for the first half-mile, while fce:i Hawk did not settla down. Ked Abbey was just iii front of Tarndalc, Overture, and Miss Adonis as they turned into the last circuit, and he stayed in front for the remainder of tho race, winning by three lengths from Nihilist Junr., who beat Miss Adonis by a length over the last fifty yards. Pink Note was at once made a hot favour* He in the "NVaikaka Handicap, with "V award and Taboo the only others of the six well backed. Equerry led out of the straight from Pink Note and Taboo, and the field r«in in this order with Vaward whipping in till approaching the far turn, where Taboo ran up to Pink Note, and tho pair led round the top from Vaward, who made lip his ground very quickly. At the home turn, Pink Note had drawn clear from Taboo, with Kqucrry, and Vaward close up. The favourite ran home a very easy winner by threequarters of a length from Vaward, who beat Equerry by two lengths for second money. Plying Mist was made a little favourite than Good as Gold in the Dominion Hack Handicap, with Money Mine and Sparkling Eyes the best supported of tho others* The last-named was the smartest to begin, ;ind led Money Mine, Insolence, and Plying Mist to tin? far turn, where Tembronoy began to show up. Kourding the top, Money Mine and 'JVmbroney were lying next to Sparklin? Eves, who led Money Mine and Plying Mist into the. straight. Sparkling Eyes, who was evidently much improved by her race on Monday, Ktayed on to win comfortably by a length from Plying Mist, with Tembroncy three lengths oft third. Celerity 11. was backed down to a short price in u one-dividend field in the Stewards' Handicap, in spite of the fact .that she was only receiving J.2lb from Comic; Song, who was ridden by P. Voight. Erne and Comic Song were tho first out, and the former was three lengths clear at the far turn. Tho favourite was going well in fourth place at this stage, but failed to negotiate the top turn. Comic Song gathered up Erne at tho distance post, and won nicely by a length. Cassolette was six lengths away third. The winner's performance should do him good for the big race at Riccarton next month. In the Balfour Harness Trot Handicap tho betting was close between Willie Wlkes, Miss Adonis. Winnie Chrysler,-, and Sunshower, with Thrift the best backed of the others. The favourite led Sissy Eocanda and Aard for two furlongs. Going into tho back stretch, Kinness moved up. and followed Willie Wilkes past the half-mile post. Then the latter ran pnst, and drawing right away won easing up by eight lengths from Miss Adonis, wit* Bob Derby four lengths away lll ln*a field of seven Doleful Ditty was sent out a good favourite for the Charlton Handicap, with only Equerry of the others at all well backed. Bright Mark, who had beaten Comic Song at Oamaru a fortnight ago, and now had a 51b allowance, was the extreme outsider. She w,is first out, and led all the way, to Avin comfortably by two lengths from Queen Balboa, who ,iust got up in to beat Equerry for second money. # Pho favourite was kept too far back in the middle part of the race, and could not get nearer than fourth. Arpent again appeared to quit his job after being well placed for five furlongs, and finished last.
