BREACH OF PROBATION.

A SENTENCE REDUCED. [THE PBESS Special Service.] DUNEDIN, August 22. The ease of James Johnson, whose appeal against a sentence of eigtheen months' reformative detention on a charge of false pretences was upheld by the Supreme Court at its recent sitting, /was before the Magistrate (Mr Bundle) this morning—he having promised a rehearing in the event of the appeal succeeding—on the charge of breach of probation on which he was also sentenced to eighteen months' reformative detention. i In answer to his Worship, the Probation Officer (Mr J. Garbutt) said that defendant's conduct during his term of probation had been very unsatisfactory indeed. Mr White pointed out that Johnson had been in the loek-up since June 14th owing to delays occasioned by the reserving of judgments, etc., and suggested that his Worship should ™ a . any term of imprisonment he might inflict date from June 14th. His Worship sentenced Johnson one month's imprisonment. This wou date from June 14th, so that defen ant could now be released.
