SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Miss Macandrew returned to Christchurch yesterday. Mr and Mrs Bruce Murray hare returned to Godley Peaks. Mr Purcell Hunter-Weston left yesterday for Mt. Possession. Mr S. Leston has returned to Christchurch. Mi and Mrs H. Harper, who were the guests of Mrs W. H. Orbell, returned to Grassy Hills yesterday. Mrs G. Murray and Miss M. Murray are visiting Christchurch. Miss P. Webb (Invercargill), who was the guest of Mrs W. W. Cartwright (Highfield), left for Christchurch yesterday. Dr. and Mrs R. Woodhouse, who were staying with Mrs R. H. Rhodes (Sealey street), returned to Bluecliffs yesterday. Mrs E. T. Layburn (Christchurch) and Miss A. Molloy (Oamaru) are the guests of Mrs G. Virtue (Elizabeth street). Amongst those staying at the Grosvenor Hotel are: Mr R. J. Paterson (Dunedin), Mr A. G. Macdonald (Auckland), Mr F. McKenna (Wellington), Mr A. V. Whitta (Christchurch), Mr T. H. E. DRAMATIC ENTERTAINMENT. In response to the invitation of Mrs J. Gore-Newell and members of the Calliope Club, over- three hundred guests, last night, attended a delightful "At Hotfie" in Jellicoe Hall. After a cordial welcome had been briefly extended to the visitors by Mrs Newell, t»o dramatic readings were excellently performed by the members of the club. The first was Stephen Phillips's fouract tragedy, "Paolo and Francesca," founded on a Dante story. Mrs Newell read the part of Giovanni Malatesta, Miss Nome Enright that of ,Paolo, Miss Molly Carrington, Francesca, and Miss Maud Just, Lucretia. Minor roles were capably filled by Misses Valerie Tennent, Nancy Roose, Allie and Ida Shepheard, Alison Fraser, Willcox, Maries, and Mrs Grundy. The reading waft, most enjoyable, and was received wit%great enthusiasm by the audience, many, of whom had attended former dramatic readings given by the club, and were appreciative of the marked progress made by many of the performers. After a brief interval, Mrs Newell' read a scene from the second act of "The Constant Nymph," the jjopular modern drama written by Margaret Kennedy and Basil Dean, which is at present being produced in London. Before supper was served Mr J. E. Purchase thanked Mrs Newell and the members of the Calliope a particularly charming entertainment, in which the performers success. .c

SPREYDON LAWN TENNIS DANCE The Spreydon Tennis Club held a successful dance in the Coronation Hall, Spreydon, on Thursday evening. MASONIC BALL. A very enjoyable evening was spent atCulverden on Thursday, when the Masonic Bali was held in the Drill Hall. This function is a most popular one,' and is eagerly looked forward to by all, as it is always an unqualified success, this year being no exception. There was a large attendance of residents, and visitors from Christchurch and the surrounding districts. Tliev hall was tastefully decorated with evergreens and streamers of blue and white, several original effects being produced. Dancing was enjoyed to the spirited music of Wells's Orchestra.
