TRAIN DERAILED.
ACCIDENT ON MAIN TRUNK.
LINE BADLY DAMAGED.
(PBMB A9SOCIATIOH TBIJSGBAK.) OTAKI, July 25. The south-bound Main Trunk express fouled the rail a hundred yards from the Otaki station this morning, capsizing the engine, postal van, and a second-class smoker. No one was injured, but a great deal of damage was done to the line. A rail penetrated a portion of the engine. There were 90 passengers on the train, 17 in the second carriage. The smash was heard a quarter of a mile away. The Napier-bound passengers were transhipped, and the Napier mail train returned to Wellington, while an engine from Palmerston North took the Auckland passengers north. The cause of the accident is probably a defective rail, possibly due to cold, frosty weather. The train luckily was'travelling only at about 20 miles an hour owing to repairs in progress on the line.
LOOP LINE COMPLETED.
(PRESS ASSOCIATION TELBOBAM.) WELLINGTON, July 25. A breakdown train, with repairs gangs and equipment, was dispatched to the scene of the railway accident at Otaki without delay. The construction of a loop-line was concentrated upon, and this was completed in time for tonight's Limited express for the north to pass over.
