No further particulars are available as to the circumstances under which a man named W. Ryan, of Redhills station, Tophouse, was found in the lounge of the Trafalgar Hotel badly knocked about, lb has been ascertained that Ryan, who engaged a room at the Trafalgar Hotel on Friday, was very lavish with money, and gave several people the impression that he was carrying a large sum with him. For instance, he insisted on giving a taxi driver £1 for a run which cost only 3s. Ryan suggested a motor drive late on friday night (not Saturday, as > previously stated) and he accordingly hired a taxi. He was accompanied by another man and two girls, besides the driver. Ryan is now able to remember being in the taxi until the party reached Moutere Hills, where the car was turned back towards Nelson. A short halt was made on a hill, and from then onwards until he regained consciousness in the hospital Ryan's mind is a blank. The driver of the taxi stated that he could throw no light on the matter. He was engaged by Ryan for a run, and, later dropped liim at the Trafalgar Hotel, about 12 o'clock; The driver said that Rvan's condition was not such as to allow of anyone taking.hia money without his knowing. The driver knev that Rvan had a large sum of money about his person. Besides two blackened eyes. Ryan is sufferinar from a fractured skull and «• broken hip The police are enquiring into the matter.
